Higashi-Neyagawa Knights - Kaumirran test drive
« on: May 10, 2016, 11:42:34 AM »
It was mid-afternoon when Kaumirran set out from her apartment.  She had put her job application in for a mercenary-type job that had piqued her interest the day before, and they had called her in the morning for an interview in the late afternoon.

She was heading toward the Higashi-Neyagawa tube station and just as she passed the entrance to Bar Non3, she was rudely bumped into.

Kaumirran heard a grunt, and then the sound of a smashing bottle, and felt a light shower of droplets of liquid on the rear of her legs.  This was followed by, "hey, dumba$$, you made me drop my drink!"

Turning around, Kaumirran was face to face with three grungy looking punks.  Two of them were still carrying a bottle of beer in their hands.  The other, closest one, who was rapidly going pink in the face, didn't.  The shattered remains of his bottle were between him and Kaumirran.

Beer-less yelled, "ya green-faced Zent cow!  You're going to pay for that!"  Beer-less started to wind up for a punch.

Kaumirran closed the door to her apartment. She held the knob with one hand as she separated the gold key from the rest on her chain with the other. She slipped the key in to the deadbolt. She twisted it into locked position. She switched the silver key to lock the second, and the bronze key for the third. It was a lot of security for one door, but it was a bad neighborhood. Break-ins occurred all of the time. She doubted that a few locks would keep anyone out who really wanted in. They would not find much if they did.

Aside from her bicycle, she had a lopsided couch in the living area, and stained bed in the back. She had no clue what the stain was from since the furniture had been left there by the previous tenants. What Kaumirran did know was that it smelled awful. It was a good thing that she was used to sleeping on the floor. She did, of course, have a prepared bag ready in case needed to leave in a hurry. When she had first moved in, she had pulled the refrigerator from its alcove. She had kicked a hole in the drywall behind it and stuffed her bag inside. It was a good hiding place, behind the fridge. Anyone who broke in and saw her living conditions was unlikely to pull the heavy, near-empty appliance out. They would toss the couch, and the bed, sure. But some things were simply not worth the hassle.

The young woman made her way down the street. She had left with plenty of time to make the trip; one always did when one traveled on foot. Obstacles arose now and again. One such obstacle presented itself to her now.

Kaumirran was jostled by the impact. She stumbled a pair of steps before she regained her balance. She straightened up to her full height, which was not much. Her eyes fell half closed in irritation as the insults started coming. Her breath came out in a quiet hum. She turned about to see what had hit her --not that she needed to, the voice and smell of the alcohol was enough to give it away. What she had not expected to find was that there were three of them.

Kaumirran opened her mouth to return the insult. The fellow in the front drew his arm back. She thought better of speaking. She did a short kick, forgoing the wind up in favor of the speed needed to intercept the punch. She did not go for the punk, however. She kicked at the bottle intending to send the broken glass toward the man's leg. As soon as she registered her foot connecting, she hopped back. When she landed she bound forward to throw her shoulder in to the man. He was, after all, between her and his friends. She could potentially take all of them off balance in a single hit.

Potential Actions:

1) Quick Kick

2) Dodge (Hop Back)

3) Shoulder Tackle

4) --

OOC:  What does Beer-less want with her? She is not a Super Saiyan God.

OOC: good first post.  However, 2 things:
A) the action summary was a little bit too concise.  quick kick to what?  shoulder tackle on whom?  Some further notes on what's expected are Posting Expectations and Common Sense Combat Posting Tips.
B) we're using Half Actions, so it would be:

1) Quick Kick to broken glass at Beer-less's legs, & Hop Back
2) Shoulder Tackle to Beer-less

Beer-less was apparently less inebriated than Kaumirran first thought.  His swing catches her in the shoulder, just as she starts winding up to kick the glass.  It hurts, and knocks her off balance, away from the broken glass, and Beer-less.

Beer-less's companions kneel down on their haunches, and slowly sip their beers, enjoying the show.

"Come back here, you green chimpanzee!", Beer-less yells as he lunges at Kaumirran.

This time, she side steps out of the way, and lines up for a shoulder tackle.  Beer-less turns to look at her in a stooped over position, and Kaumirran lands her shoulder right smack in the middle of his face.  He tumbles over backwards, landing on his butt.

The hit must've broken something, as blood pours out of both of his nostrils.  He looks at Kaumirran with a comically surprised expression, betraying his shock that someone smaller than him could take him down so fast.

One of Beer-less's companions, Berry, wearily stands up, with his gaze locked on Kaumirran.  The other companion, Suwa, is still squatting, paused mid-swig.

Beer-less is within grappling range.  Berry and Suwa are within combat range.

Kaumirran landed on all fours. She was straddling the loud-mouthed one. Her shoulder ached. He had managed to land a good hit on her. It had left her fingers feeling cold, and tingly. Must have hit a nerve just right. Hopefully, it was not too bad. She did not have time to delve too far in to self-assessment; she was a tad preoccupied at the moment.

If she had been smart, she would have taken the opportunity to make her escape. Three-on-One were great odds, but only for a single side. She was on the wrong side of that one. But if she ran, then she was giving them permission to pick on her. She did not want them to get the wrong impression. Plus, she was a not big fan of the name-calling.

The Meltran raised her head. The man was bleeding pretty good. Apparently, he had not been the only one to get in a nice shot. Kaumirran's lips parted in a cross between a toothy smile and a sneer. She dropped her head again, and charged forward. The whole two hands' worth of distance that she had to travel to meet Beer-Less's face.

A headbutt was not exactly fun for either participant. It could be effective in some things though, such as providing an opening. In this case, it was means of getting the man out of the way so that she could get to his friends. She was already low. She could move past him and plow in to the legs of Berry. He was the biggest threat at the moment since he was the one standing. But he would not be without working knees.

Action List

1) Bull-Charge Headbutt to Beer-Less while moving forward on her hands and knees

2) Pouncing-style Low Dive Tackle to Berry's Knees since she was already down there.

OOC:  Is that better?

Beer-less wasn't paying attention to Kaumirran any more.  He was wiping the blood pouring from his nose with the shirt on his forearms, and cursed, "I think my nose is broken!"

Kaumirran's headbutt smacked Beer-less's skull with a loud crack.  It hurt.  Bad.  She briefly saw stars, while registering Beer-less slumping backwards on the sidewalk.

She started moving in Berry's direction.  But her head really hurts, and her actions are sluggish.  She's going to have a nasty bump for awhile on her forehead.

Berry yells at Suwa, "holy crap!  She's psycho!  Let's get out of here!"  He immediately started running down the sidewalk, away from Kaumirran.

Suwa gets to his feet, and yells at Berry, "What about... ah hell with it!", and took off after Berry.

In a daze, Kaumirran looks back at Beer-less.  He looks like he's out cold, not moving.

For one reason or another - probably due to the head injury, Kaumirran has a flashback to one of the many sorties she was forced to undertake in that ratty old VF-1 to defend her former captures and their secret base.

She had just launched outside the dome, over the surface of the planet, when her rear targeting radar receivers started squawking warnings.  Glancing back, she saw a Quadoran-Roh about 750 m behind on a similar heading and speed as her, and having just fired 12 close-combat missiles at Kaumirran.

The terrain is rugged, with only human-sized boulders sprinkled over a relatively flat plain (= no cover), and there aren't any clouds in the sky.  About 10 km away, there are some low hills.

VF-1A:
half MDC/speed/sensors.
full defensive systems.
Armaments (working 100%): 1x head laser, GU-11 (200 r), AMM-1 (8, 2 per hard point).

OCC: apologies for changing genres just when it was starting to get interesting.  But as this is a combat familiarization topic...

Your combat summary was much better.  However, be careful about 'putting words into the GM's mouth' (re: prose section).  In this case, at the end of the last melee, I envisioned Kaumirran as still on her feet after the tackle (and a player could validly argue that as it was vaguely written it was open to a less difficult interpretation).  So, you've written your character into a more difficult position (prone/on the ground), and the GM has decided to go with that.  Take care about it in the future.  ;)

Kaumirran's eyes closed against the burst of pain in her head. No one ever won in a headbutt. The goal was simply to do more damage and provide a greater shock in the receiver than the initiator. She heard the words come from the other men, though they were more shallow than they should have given how close they were to her. She heard the footfalls as they retreated. The display of recklessness must have looked more impressive than it felt.

It was only once the sounds of men's escape had faded away that Kaumirran risked letting the groan that held slip through her lips. She should probably take her leave as well. Not, of course, before she helped herself to Beer-Less's wallet. She opened her eyes.

The HUD showed dotted lines blinking up from the rear. There were red lights flashing across the panel. As if the visitor was not trouble enough, this old machine that she was in was rickety at best. It was probably being held together by duct tape and bubble gum. That meant something, coming from one of the mechanics. That was not important at the moment. She had an intruder to deal with.

Kaumirran shoved the throttle forward. She was pushed back in to her seat as the engines kicked up. The missile icons ticked closer on the display. She thumbed the release button for the valkyrie's countermeasures. The mecha spewed a line of flares and random bits of reflective metals, though they were quickly lost in a cloud of smoke. She waited an additional two seconds before she cut the engines. The hushed roar went silent. More importantly, it lowered her heat signature. Kaumirran reached down and flipped the level to transform in to Battloid.

The machine shifted around her.  She spun the mecha around using bursts from the vernier. With the wings still extended, inertia kept her moving. Now backward and gliding --albeit losing some altitude in the process-- she stared in to the image of the smoke on her monitor. The countermeasures were generating a blind spot in her HUD. That was, naturally, the system point: to confuse sensors. It would not last long, but it did not need to.

Kaumirran raised the arms of her Battloid. She squeezed the keys on her right-hand stick, which in turn caused the massive hand outside to tighten its fingers on the weapon's trigger. The gunpod whirled up. The feedback of the shaky weapon caused her hand to vibrate. She twitched the left-hand from side to side. The left arm of the valkyrie, which was bracing the barrel of the gunpod, moved with it. The effect was to spray the bullets in to the smoke cloud. She may not have been able to see through the sensor mess, but she was willing to bet that meant their guest could not see through it, either.

Actions (not sure if this counts as two or three):

1) Increase Throttle & Deploy anti-missile countermeasures (Flare, Chaff, Smoke)

2) Cut Throttle Off & Transform (Battloid Mode with Wings Deployed)

3) Turn (gliding backwards, and dipping in altitude from lack of engine thrust)  & Fire Gunpod (Spray: Medium Burst; 20 Rounds) Blindly through the Countermeasure cloud toward the missiles and Queadlunn

OOC:  DID I put her in to a more difficult position?  Or did I place her right where I wanted her?  ;)

Also, you don't mind if I use 'Battloid' instead of 'Battroid' when I write, do you? I just prefer that translation.

Kaumirran's Valkyrie accelerates forward as bursts of chaff, flares, and smoke shoot out of the rear of the fighter.  Luck is on her side, and the 12 missiles dive straight into the countermeasures, and explode harmlessly.

As she is cutting throttle and transforming, the Quadoran-Roh flights smoothly around the cloud of countermeasures, and starts chopping at her VF with its arm beam guns.  Kaumirran avoids the shots as she turns around.  Her 20 r burst tags the Battle-suit, but despite its frontal armour getting shredded for the most part, it just keeps coming.

The Battle-suit rockets skywards, chopping at Kaumirran with its arm guns - which again, Kaumirran avoids.

As the Battle-suit continues accelerating skywards, it unleashes another volley of 12 micro-missiles.

At the speed the Battle-suit is currently going, it'll be out of gun pod range in 2 actions.  The missiles will hit within 1 action.

OOC: attacks 1 and 2 could've been combined.  You've neglected to include one action (your PC has 8, or 4 with half actions).

Did you put her in a more difficult position?  As this is a teaching topic - yes, you did.  But if there's any place to experiment with game mechanics, this would be the place to do it...

Battroid/Battloid, both are okay.  (Do note the standard Modified Hepburn rendering.)  Also take note that mecha is a non-standard term.  Official Macross terminology differs...

Kaumirran fired in to the sensor messing of the jamming field. There were flashes of light from the missile explosions within it. The shockwaves rocked her machine with bursts of turbulence. An alarm pinged from her console. She risked a quick glance down. On the side of the display was the icon for the Queadlunn. It had circled around, avoided her trap.

The battle-suit began to fire at her. It had a better position than she did. She jerked the control stick to the side. It was not particularly quick to respond in glide mode. She pushed the throttle up. The engines reignited. She tapped her feet. Left. Right. Left. Left. Right. The Battloid bounced from side to side as the engines matched her movements. It was still slow. That was a failing of the old design. It was simply inferior to that of her opponent.

Kaumirran’s eyes widened as she noticed streaming trails arcing in her direction. Just as she had been starting to feel like she was making some headway, the invader let lose a flurry of missiles. Kaumirran threw the throttle all of the way up, while tilting the Battloid back. With the legs now pointed straight out toward the horizon, she was moving rather quickly.  Of course, the ground was a little too close to give her any good maneuvering room, and the missiles were not going to be fooled by her moving in a straight line. She flipped her weapon control to the head-mounted laser. She depressed the trigger, firing off several beams at the incoming missiles. If she could take out a few of them, then hopefully those few would handle the rest.

Kaumirran pushed the lever to reconfigure the Valkyrie in to GERWALK. She rolled the machine until the legs were oriented toward the ground. The engines were still on high. They gave her a little more altitude. When she was high enough to safely do so, she switched back in to fighter mode. She pushed the nose up to give chase to the Queadlunn.

The acceleration pushed her hard in to her chair. The G-forces were too heavy at that speed. Her vision began to darken. She keyed back her engines to a setting that she could more comfortably output. In seconds Kaumirran’s vision cleared up. She switch her primary weapon again, this time to her missiles. She lined up a shot and released one at the Queadlunn-Rau. She waited a couple of second to give the missile a head start before she let loose with a second one.

Actions:

1)  Full Speed (Battloid) Horizontal Flight & Spraying Head Laser (10 Round Burst) at the incoming Missiles

2) Mode Change (GERWALK), reorient & Mode Change (Fighter), Slower Speed & Pursue the Power Armour

3) Fire 1 Missile at the Queadlunn-Rau

4) Fire 1 Missile at the Queadlunn-Rau

OOC: Her attacks were not neglected so much as they were situationally obsolete. She was in a blinded position attempting an ambush. It was one of those times were mechanics and story don’t line up. I chose to run the story angle. To be honest, when there is a conflict, I usually run the story angle. It's the writer in me. And yes, I am aware that works to my disadvantage.

In a worse position? Perhaps. She was low, which made punching awkward. The men could have still kicked at her, but their buddy was between her and them. It was a more defensible location, which is where you want to be when outnumbered three-to-one.

Mecha is a non-standard term, I agree.  But then, they don’t have to describe everything on the show verbally. I thought that saying ‘valkyrie’ multiple times per sentence could get a tad grating on the reader. So I mixed it up.  Perhaps ‘machine’ is a better choice.

I cannot note the Modified Hepburn becaaaause I don’t know it.  I am just not good at foreign languages. *helpless shrug* That’s why I stick to the spellings commonly used in the shows’ subtitles: those are terms that I know.

OOC:  OOC more than 1 line long in the OOC topic.  As a teaching topic, I'll wave that rule for game mechanics related questions.  But all other stuff should be in the OOC topic.  Thanx.
- Modified Hepburn can be found on Wikipedia.
- Be careful about taking subtitles at face value.  Many times they are wrong.  E.g.: "Brief 25" when the dialogue was "VF-25".
- Fighter / GERWALK / Battroid / Valkyrie / VF-# / Destroid / Mobile Weapon (generally for the Zentradi) / the ### are all valid terms that I've come across in my translations.

Game mechanics:
In face to face RPGing, you are correct about reducing the number of actions.  However, in PBP, we don't have that luxury.  In the future, consider the ambush as the last action of the preceding melee, and always consider your post the actions you would like for a entirely new melee.
As always, if you would like clarification, post in the OOC (usually your first action would be the only one where your PC would be situationally unaware - but with the half actions rule in affect, your PC should be able to quickly appraise the situation and respond appropriately to it).

Kaumirran's head laser spray takes out only the 4 missiles that she hit.  The other 8 continue hurtling toward her.  She slams her control column to the side and maxes out her vernier rockets while spitting out a trail of flares in an attempt to avoid them.

It works!  The missiles blaze by, and corkscrew randomly for a few moments trying to reacquire her until they run out of fuel.

The Quadoran-Roh starts to level off at about a 2,000 m higher altitude than Kaumirran, who is simultaneously changing modes and starting to accelerate skyward.  Taking advantage of it, the Powersuit chops at her VF-1 with its arm guns - shots that Kaumirran neatly avoids.

It continues firing as Kaumirran locks on with her missiles - shots that connect, and cause major damage to her VF-1!  The Valkyrie was already at roughly half of its normal capabilities, and that damage just dropped engine thrust, among other things), to a third of normal!  Smoke billows out of numerous dorsal holes in her VF.

The missile rockets skyward, and draws the Quadoran-Roh's pilot's attention away from Kaumirran's VF.  The Battlesuit starts peppering the sky with Impact Cannon shots - which miss.

Kaumirran fires a second missile as the Quadoran-Roh smartly avoids the first missile.  Alas the Battlesuit shoots it out of the sky within moments of launching.

OOC:
Battlesuit approximately 1,000 m above Kaumirran.  At her speed, Kaumirran will pass by it in about 1 action (1.5 is more accurate.  Game mechanics... ugh).

Kaumirran winced against the sound of the new round of klaxons. Her speed dipped as the engine damage took its toll. She pushed the throttle forward, which given her current orientation was up. The added thrust just about allowed her to match the velocity that she been a few seconds before.

She leaned forward to cut the alarms. The flickering red warning lights remained to remind her of the damage that her machine had sustained though. Pointless. It was not as if she was going to suddenly forget. The sluggish controls were a reminder of their own her every time she attempted to coax the Valkyrie to move.

Kaumirran looked up from the control board to see her missile blossoming in to a ball of fire. She threw the control yoke to side, rolling the smoking VF-1 to the side to avoid the debris. The last thing that she needed was shrapnel peppering her already holed fighter.

Kaumirran continued her sideward spin to put herself out of range any more potential damage from the detonation. When she judged moved far enough to avoid the billowing cloud, she cut the spin from her climb. She fired her laser at the Queadlunn-Rau's glowing thruster as she closed the distance between it and herself. She shot passed the enemy machine before she switched back to the winged Battloid mode. She left the engines on a hover setting this time so as to keep her current altitude. She was currently above the intruder, which gave her second to work. Kaumirran tugged back on her control grip, raising the gunpod outside. Taking a few seconds, she lined up her shot with the movements of the battlesuit. She zeroed in on the second of the thrusters, and depressed the trigger. As the weapon was firing, she switched back to the head-mounted laser cannons. She lined them up on her foe's thruster -the same one that she had fired at during her climb- as pulled back on the trigger once again.

1) Fire Head Laser (10 Round Burst) at the Queadlunn-Rau's Left Engine Thruster

2)  Fly past Target and Reconfigure (Battloid, Winged in Hover Mode); Aim the Gunpod at the Queadlunn-Rau.

3) Fire the Gunpod in a Long Burst (50 Rounds) at the Queadlunn-Rau's Right Engine Thrusters (Now 100 Rounds Remaining in the Gunpod, I believe).

4) Fire Head Lasers in a Long Burst (20 Rounds) at the Queadlunn-Rau's Left Engine Thruster.

OOC: Aiming, as I recall, takes up an Action.

I'm a'learning the Board's Rules. Slowly, but I'm getting there!  ;)

Also, do we have an OOC Sub-Board? I saw an OOC for the Setting.

OOC:  re OOC: go to http://nomansland.site.nfoservers.com/MRG-Active-Archive/forums/index.php?board=79.0 , and look for "Steel Valkyries OCC".

re: aiming: another one of those things that doesn't work that well in PBP RPing.  I think the only time that its worth considering (as in "costs 1 action" is in a long-range sniping situation.  In other situations, just consider not spending 1 action aiming as a perk from the "Half Actions" rule.

The Quadoran-Roh lets out a stream of flares to distract Kaumirran's first missile, which was starting to turn around to reacquire its target.  Concurrently, the Battlesuit unleashes a flock of 12 dogfight missiles at her - which is momentarily obscured by the flares.

Kaumirran opts to fire into the missiles with the head laser (the engine thrusters are obscured by the Battlesuit's legs at her present firing angle).  She hits and destroys one, but it doesn't affect the other 11.

In the next few moments, both fighters have to deal with missiles.  The Quadoran-Roh rolls over and fires its arm guns at the AMM-1 - and misses!  It fires another burst of flares, and just barely barrel-rolls out of the missile's way!
Kaumirran transforms, fires flares, and also just barely avoids the crowd of angry missiles.  The missiles, however, don't explode in the flares, and start looping around to get back on her tail!

The Quadoran-Roh returns her attention on Kaumirran, and takes pot shots at her with her arm guns.  Shots that Kaumirran can't avoid, rip through the VF-1, shutting down all systems in the process, and sending the burning ruin of the Valkyrie tumbling - first upwards, with momentum, and then downwards.

Kaumirran ejects from the ruined Valkyrie, and as she rockets away, she briefly catches out of the corner of her eye the 11 dogfight missiles exploding around it, turning its remains into slag.

The multitude of shock-waves hit her, and as she drifts out of consciousness, she is vaguely aware of the Quadorun-Roh shooting the AAM-1, and rocketing away.

Back in the 'present', Kauimirran shakes off the head-fog, and recalls waking up after the battle in the base's infirmary.  Her masters were angrier than normal - not that she had been shot down, but that her patchwork VF was beyond repair, and that the enemy had scored some decent hits on the base in their raid.

It was only a few weeks later that she escaped into her new life, and that was her last sortie in that deathtrap of a Valkyrie.

Examining the contents of Beer-less's wallet, she finds only a fiver, and an expired condom.
