Elpis Faction, Irmuska star system, planet Andis, Raimonds city - Hooters and grumbles & a hard Björn life

"Hey.  Some jackass ran out all of the fuel on my ride."

Her communique is met with static.

She also notes that telemetry from the Major's VF-11D has stopped.  Due to that, she no longer knows exactly how far behind her the 32 Jināru and 28 Quadoran-Rō are, nor if they're still in pursuit or if any other units have joined the swarm.

She throttles the engines down to minimum.  At that level, they are only producing the electricity to run the Thunderbolt's systems.

However, her navigational computer is flashing a warning that she doesn't have enough momentum to take her to the 120 km interception altitude.  Her apogee is predicted to be at between 110 and 112 km.  She also notes that even if she uses up the last of the reactant in her VF's tanks, it'll only give her an addition 1 or 2 km—not enough.

Of course, if she were in the stratosphere (or lower), she'd be able to fly non-stop for almost a week with her remaining fuel.  However, she's up in the thermosphere, where the atmosphere is so thin, it might as well be deep space!

Kaumirran spots the Hamekahame overhead skipping over the waves of denser air where the mesosphere extends into the thermosphere.  It's kind of beautiful—there is a faint glow of heated air that glows faintly orange and breaks to either side when the Hamekahame's prow hits, and the entire ship is buffeted higher, before gradually falling a bit before hitting the next wave of clear air, and setting off the next faint burst of burnt-orange light.

Nevertheless, even though the Hamekahame is surfing a couple of kilometres lower than the agreed-upon intercept altitude, it's still beyond her reach.  The ship's crew also appear to have realized Kaumirran's predicament, and she notes the Hamekahame accelerating higher and away from the planet!

Before she can vocalize her opinion at the ship, the squad's radio channel squawks to life:

"Hey pokey!  Outta gas?" playfully chides Mr. D as his VF (the Major's VF-1X) slides into formation to her left.

"You missed the bus, girl!" mocks Bah, as his VF-1A pulls up abreast on her right.

"Cut the chatter!" barks the Major, as the Starbug—a Zentrādi Light Transport Boat—roars overhead.  The rear doors are open, and the Major and Björn's GERWALK-mode VF-11D can be seen at the rear of the cargo hold (nearest the boat's bow).  The Major is standing on his VF's outstretched palm, leaning over and into Björn's open cockpit.  Björn is unmoving.

"Land your bird in here!" yells the Major at Kaumirran.  "Bah!  D!  Shove her in here if she dawdles!  We got a tsunami of angry Elpis pods coming in fast!  And we don't need any more casualties!!!"

Kaumirran

Kaumirran surreptitiously peered down her nose at the screen. Trying to disguise the glance did little -possibly even nothing- to cause the blips to disappear. The enemy was coming whether she wanted them to or not. Her feelings on the matter fell mainly in the not category. She had been interested in only having a single one of them follow her. She was fairly certain that one was not part of the closing masses.

A large splotch appeared on the screen. She looked up to see the Starbug hovering through the canopy. The sight caused the clenching in her waist to ease. That one was at least welcome. The Starbug, not the clenching. She could do without the latter.

She was smiling when the communication screen popped to life. She quickly wiped the dumb look off of her face. She tried to cover up any of it that made it through by answering Mr. D in her usual manner. “It’s not my fault. They forgot to fill it up before they stored it for the night. Complain to them.” She nodded her head to back in roughly the direction of the incoming force.

Kaumirran’s hand twitched against the stick, adjusting the angle of her fighter using the thrusters. She figured that there was no reason to use what precious fuel she had left on changing her trajectory before bringing the engines back up. Once she was lined up with the hanger, she slid the appropriate handle forward. The fighter jumped forward. At the same time, the fuel gauge dropped. She only got so far before the engines began to sputter. A few seconds later, the flame disappeared altogether, leaving her with only her inertia to keep her moving.

"It’s not my fault. They forgot to fill it up before they stored it for the night. Complain to them."

"I hear that," Bah quickly chimes in.

Moments later, she's in GERWALK inside the rear of the Starbug.  Bah and Mr. D quickly follow.  Almost immediately, the rear hatches close, and they feel the Starbug accelerating and banking upwards.

"K!" the Major barks at Kaumirran.  "You alright?  No injuries?"  He barely mumbles a "Good" when he hears her response.  His attention is 100% on Björn.

Kaumirran notes that the Major has that emergency helmet of his that she had to wear a few short days ago when she was sucking that gas giant's upper atmosphere.  This time, the Major has put it on the unmoving Björn, and is focused on Björn's condition.

Bah asides to Kaumirran when he notes her looking in that direction.  "Helmet leak.  He barely made it inside before blacking out."

"Quite impressive that he lasted so long at this altitude," he muses.  "Most pilots lose it only halfway up the [gravity] well."

Elpis Faction, Irmuska star system, planet Andis, high orbit - Hooters and grumbles & a hard Björn life

In a dozen minutes or so, the Starbug lands inside the Hamekahame.

As soon as the hatch opens, medical staff with a stretcher race in, and put Björn on it.  They immediately wheel him out, and to the ship's medical facility.

It takes a few moments, but Kaumirran registers that this was the first time that she saw any other Myclone-sized crew in the Hamekahame.  She starts wondering what other members of the crew are Myclone-sized, and if Captain Alakai and the other bridge staff are Myclone or giant-sized.

The ashen-faced Major walks over, with his gaze locked on Björn being wheeled through the gargantuan hangar in the Hamekahame Suvāru Saran Battleship.

With an unusually calm and quiet voice, he instructs them: "Move the VFs to our repair bay.  Give them a once over, and tuck in for the night.  Captain Alakai wants us ready to sortie at 17:00."

The pilots note that their sortie time is just less than 6 hours later.

The Major continues, "D, take my 11.  Bah, take... ... Björn's..."  He then walks resolutely in the direction that the medics took Björn.

Climbing into his VF, Mr. D takes a good look at the dorsal surface of Kaumirran's VF-11D.  He lets out a long, low whistle when he spots the impact marks and scorches left by Khumirran's shots.

"Looks like you got out of there only by the skin of your teeth, eh," he says.  His tone is equal mix concern, and sarcasm.

Bah is already on the move, taking his VF-1 to the repair bay first.

Kaumirran

Kaumirran gave the Zentraedi roaming around only the briefest of glances. So, it would seem that she was not the only one stuck in a tiny body. That was a shame. It bit being a shorty. For as much as they liked her kind being that way, she never saw a human volunteering to shift down to six centimeters for her amusement. They were a hypocritical bunch, humans.

Her mind was so occupied by that and other thoughts that she nearly missed the instructions that been coming her way. “What happens tomorrow?” Maybe the Major had already told her and it had passed in through one ear and blew back out of the other. That was why she sent the question to the other two boys and not to him. Besides, the Major was busy with the latest injury.

"Looks like you got out of there only by the skin of your teeth, eh,"

“This time,” Kaumirran answered as she walked with a hunch up the Gerwalk’s nosecone. It had been parked that way because it was easier to move around in that form than it was in Fighter and easier to mount than in Battloid. “I'll do better next time.”

“What happens tomorrow?”

Bah looks blankly at her.  "He didn't say."

“This time.  I'll do better next time.”

Mr. D shrugs.  He didn't want to waste chatting with Kaumirran.  He wanted to get as much sleep time in before their next sortie, as he knew that he'd need it, what with the way things usually go with this group of pilots.

In no time everyone has checked over and squared away their Valkyries.  Even though things went smoothly, it left only 5 hours before their sortie time.
