Character Background:
Zed Cassel was born in San Francisco in the year 2026. His father, Kyle Cassel, is the 6th son of eight children to a Spanish family in the California central valley. His family was very religious and very controlling, which inevitably led to Kyle's disregard for all rules except those that seemed right to him. Around 2025 Kyle met a young caucasian woman named Emily Gaust. She had been working as a temp for the company that Kyle belonged to. Through their mutual longing and lust, Emily became pregnant and decided to move to the rebuilt San Francisco. Kyle, trying to be the responsible father, moved with her. With young Zed born Emily and Kyle remained unmarried. Immediately they knew that Zed was intelectualy talented, but due to their frictional homelife, did not foster his growth well. A year before Zed's younger sister Renee was born, also the year before Zed began school, Kyle married Emily out of necessity and guilt. Thus Zed's childhood was filled with hidden tension, the kind that a young child stores away in his subconcious without thinking about it. His social life suffered growing up, never fitting in. He was a dreamer, and much to his parents' chagrin, watched DYRL constantly, wanting to be a variable pilot. He let his imagination rule his mind in class, drifting away in boredom from the lessons he felt were too easy. When he was old enough, he built a replica glider of a WWII P-51 Mustang, and launched in it from the hills above San Francisco. This alarmed many a defense force soldier, and as a result he was detained and his glider impounded. Other than this, Zed's record was very clean. He never fought, never was mean. He chose to see the good in people, and to respect them no matter what. This did not mean he didn't see the bad or the faults, just he chose to ignore them.
As Zed entered secondary school, he finally met a friend. Jake Hawthorne. Jake was the son of two Defense Force career marines, and as a result, shared many of the same dreams of a military career that Zed had. Jake recognized the intellectual talent within Zed, and chose to benefit from it. While this caused Jake to excel in school, Zed floundered, still insecure and caught in dreams. At the beginning of his third year, Zed was unfortunate enough to really hurt his back. He could not walk for extended periods of time for over a month. This galvanized his resolve into bettering himself. Just as his back was fully healed, his friend Jake's parents came to Kyle and Emily, announcing they were leaving on the Colony 15 mission. Because their lives were so hectic, Zed's parents signed on at the last minute. Because of this, many school records, medical records, and personal items were left on Earth. When Zed started his final year of secondary school, he knew that he would apply for Beginhill 15. He concentrated all of his efforts into staying in shape and writing his entrance thesis. On the weekend that the thesis were due, Jake offered to take them over personally on a shuttle while he went to see his parents. On the way over, Jake changed a few things on Zed's thesis and made it his own, effectively leaving Zed's application bare. When Zed learned of this, he confronted Jake in physical education. He challenged him to a game of basketball, winner took credit for the thesis. In the last moments of the game, Jake drove his elbow into Zed's chin, giving him his small scar and winning the game. Stunned, but not too surprised at the loss, Zed walked away. He did not become angry with Jake, nor hate him. He hated himself for not recognizing Jake's manipulations of him. At the same time, his parents revealed to each other each of their infidelities, and divorced. Zed at first took sides, but then began to resent their lack of love for each other, and decided to just look out for his sister. None of his family wanted him joining the Spacy, and as he graduated and declared his intentions, they disowned him Still wanting to be a pilot, he spent his following year out of secondary school writing a new thesis and practicing his general flying skills. His social confidence was completely shot however.
His three years at Beginhill 15 went fast. He avoided most of the other cadets during offtime, but proved to be an excellent soldier and leader during classes. He avoided making new friendships and focused on being the best he could. Despite himself, the cadets in his training class did break through his resolve, and he found that he depended on them to be there. In training exorcises he made it his goal to look out for them. One cadet in particular Zed trusted, and that was his bunk mate and wingman Henry Chinaski. One other cadet became a good acquaintance to him, and that was Edward Silos. Silos ended up being fast tracked through training a few months before Zed, and found himself as part of the Macross 15 City Busters. Zed keeps a running correspondence with Silos, though that had been interrupted for a while with malfunctions in the fleet mailing system. Only once did he bump into Jake, and at that time he just kept going, not angry, but still hurt.
Zed now has been assigned to the Archers as part of the 13th Galaxy Patrol Fleet. He recently received word that the Macross 15 Fleet had been attacked, and worries about his friend Silos.
