Suggest a squadron name
« on: July 19, 2011, 11:48:03 AM »
In the process of building this game, I've reached a major hurdle - the need for a cool sounding VF squadron name.  I'm not very good at coming up with uber cool VF squadron names, which is why I'm asking for suggestions.  Who knows, maybe your suggestion will become the name of this game's PC squadron?

The rules:
1) you can submit multiple different submissions, multiple times.
2) please refrain from recycling existing squadron names in the MRG.

Optional:
1) you can also include a line up to a brief paragraph or two on the origins of the name, and it's current mystique in NUNS.

Thanks!

EDIT: Awesome suggestions so far:

The colour coordinated squad names and names based off of Greek/Latin numbers/letters also lend themselves well to identifying which ship the squads are from, too.
Eg: ROY G BIV squads on a Guantanamo.  ROY G BIVx Knights on an Uraga.  The Greek Letters on the Cruiser and the Latin Numbers on the Northampton.

PC's squad... so far:
ROY G BIV
ROY G BIVx Knights
ROY G BIVx Barons

Black Devils
Cowboys
Death Stalkers
Dragon Slayers
Goose/Geese (duck, duck, GOOSE!)
Loons
Mad Hatters
Magistrates
Oracle (Recon Squad)
Poltergeist (spec ops)
Rangers
Rogue
The Fated
The Hummingbirds
Tophatters
Wildcards

Just a couple off the top of my head right now,

1) The wildcards - Taken from Space above and beyond but has one of the best callsign structures I think of all fictional fighter squadrons

2) The Death Stalkers

3) Cowboys - taken from a small story I have written before that is keep on here somewhere

4) option four involves using Greek Alphabet letters, ie Alpha, Zeta, Epsilon, Iota, Eta

5) Rangers

6) "insert colour" Knights

7) The Dragon Slayers

I like these.

What about silly names? All of the names suggested seem quite serious, which is well and good. But nicknames are what other people/squadrons call you. If everyone on the ship wants to call your squadron The Pink Petticoats, you're The Pink Petticoats whether you like it or not. Living down (or embracing) a silly squadron nickname might be a unifying point for the squadron members.

Examples of nicknames that are possibly silly:
  • Tophatters
  • Mad Hatters
  • Loons
  • Goose/Geese (duck, duck, GOOSE!)
  • The Hummingbirds

Anything that adds a little bit of creative flavor, right?

Good suggestions.

I like the silly names.  Also the nicknames based on something embarrassing.  Brings back some memories of pilot callsigns:

Pop-top (accidentally pulled canopy ejection lever after first flight on F-16)
Fish (last name Sturgeon.)

Hummingbirds isn't bad.   The band that performed for Firebomber in Macross 7 real name was Hummingbird.
