OOC: If you don?t want your character to die ? well, it?s now too late to remove your character from the game.  Bwahahahah.  That said, there is one remaining option: turning tail, and running away.

The Black Wraiths had been called back to the CV-566 Brazil as it moved towards another ship in the orbit of New Patagonia.  Once alongside each other, a bunch of equipment and supplies, some VFs and their pilots, and the surrendered Meltraendi mercenary were transferred to it.

Shortly afterwards, the Brazil formed up with a fleet of 26 other ships (Uraga, Haruna, Bolognese, a Zentraedi Picket Ship, and a heavily modified Oberth ECM variant ship.)  They all promptly entered spacefold.  Destination ? Earth!

Mid-Space Fold to Earth

The Black Wraiths had a few minutes to relax, use the facilities, and get some refreshments.  There was a new face (2nd Lt. Florinas), and a familiar face (1st Lt. Black) amongst the pilots in the waiting lounge next to the airlock leading into the hanger.

Major Kavryn was alerted by her data pad to messages in her inbox.  There were plenty of the standard messages sent to a squadron leader (someone?s VF was fixed, delay on parts, need a signature for ammo expenditure/approval, etc.) along with one with a name that burned itself into her retinas.

Sender: McKenzie King

Hey!
Glad to hear things are going well. Things could definitely be going better here. I swear this assignment is nothing but trouble at times.  I could really do with some vacation on Meena. And real vacation this time. We could skip right past the kidnapping.

Leaving on a mission now. Don't know when I'll reachable again.

Miss you too,
Mjuiri

Mjuiri,

Things are looking up.  The UNG parked a 3-Star in orbit, and most of the damage has been fixed.  Meena?s almost back to normal.  The trial is also proceeding, and the evidence that you presented has given the prosecution a slam-dunk case.  Though, I would like to see you again? to compare notes and stuff.  It?s an official thing, right.  ;)

When you come, there?s a mountain resort I?d like to take you to.  Nice alpine vistas, skiing, and close enough to a beach to for sun tanning.  Though, I don?t recommend swimming in the glacier fed lake!  It?s also very remote.

Miss you,
McKenzie.

Mid-Space Fold to Earth

Not too long afterwards, Commander Yoshimoto calls everyone to a briefing.  He?s compiled what he knows, asked a few more questions to the surrendered Meltraendi mercenary, and formulated a plan of action.

?Black Wraiths, welcome you two new members,? he says, directing the last with a nod of his head towards Black and Florinas.  ?I had hoped that there were more UNI Special Forces trained operatives in New Patagonia?s orbit, but the rest of them are either en route, or at LV-426.  They will not be able to join us.

1st Lt. Black picked up a Meltraendi mercenary who had remained behind after the Sector Seven Space Pirates' (SSSP) devastating attack on New Patagonia.  In summary, what she said is ??

(OOC: it?s a recycle of the last few posts in chapter 6.  Reread them if you want the summary.)

Commander Yoshimoto looks at his watch.  It's faintly visibly, but the man is genuinely nervous and agitated.  ?We?ll be defolding in the Solar System in just over 6 hours? we must make this brief to maximize our preparation time?

The SSSP are most likely to use the same tactics that they employed during their attack on New Patagonia. Observations picked up off of survivors and surviving equipment in orbit indicate that the SSSP Gun Ship needs time to build up a charge before firing, and after defolding.  During that time, the rest of their fleet, which appears to be mostly composed of Varuta elements, will act as a defensive and offensive perimeter to keep the UNAF off balance long enough for the ship to charge.  Their combined forces then punch a hole through whatever UNAF defences remain, and the Gun Ship fires its main weapon at the planet.

It?s a blunt, straightforward attack, which is quite successful.  The Zentraedi proved its worth over the millennia.?  It looks like Commander Yoshimoto wants to add something more about a hunch or a feeling, but after glancing at the eyes of the pilots in the Black Wraiths, he swallows whatever he wants to say.  Now is not the time for uncertainty and doubt.

?It?s to be expected that they are expecting us to fold a squad of fighters next to or near their gun ship, and that they?ve prepared countermeasures to destroy any VFs that do that as they complete the defold operation.  Therefore, the rest of the fleet will fold in to a position to the rear of the SSSP, preventing any of them from escaping and also catching them in a crossfire, while we will defold near the moon.?

Commander Yoshimoto points to a map of half of the Earth on a screen behind him.  It?s showing elements of the Earth Defence Force Fleet.  Yoshimoto points at two groups of inactive Bolognese Frigates floating in orbital parking lots.  ?From the moon, you will fold to here or here.  Concurrently, the Brazil will send activation signals to the frigates to warm them up.  You will defold, land in the rear hangar, and using a special ship-control device that is standard on all UNI VFs, commandeer the ships, and use them as your armoured battering rams to punch a hole through the enemy defensive rings.

It?s doubtful that the Frigates will survive, but they will last long enough for you to get close enough to the SSSP?s gun ship to overcome whatever anti-VF defences they have, and destroy or disable the ship.  Also, don?t just ditch the frigates when you get close, but make sure you crash them into something.  The more distractions you can make, the larger the chance of success becomes.

You are all also being issued spiritia reaction weapons.  They are untested, but if you remember what happened on LV-426 when the desert turned into an ocean? it?s the same reaction, but on a much smaller scale.  The scientists recommend being about double the distance from the blast of a normal reaction weapon.  Given what happened on LV-426, you may want to be triple the distance?

Once you?ve deployed from the Brazil, the ship will move to a command position and take control of whatever UNAF elements are in orbit and hopefully better coordinate their actions with your mission.  For my part, I?ll be taking Levi to Apollo base to the fountain... hopefully he?ll be revived and be able to be deployed before??  Yoshimoto catches himself, and stops talking before he mentions anything too gloomy.

?Oh, take care to do what the Meltraendi mercenary requested.  Who knows? if you spot that crazed mercenary Pheyos and manage to take it out, we could suddenly have a new set of allies in our efforts to save Earth.  Build up as much good karma as you can with the Meltraendi mercenaries.

Questions??*

?Dismissed.  Try and get some rest, but also take some time to check your VF?s condition,? Commander Yoshimoto concludes.**

OOC: fireworks start next week.  Please wrap up any relation dangling threads this week.

*This is the time to post questions and/or tactics for spiritia warfare.
**Rushing a bit, to allow any characterization time to continue.

Earth Orbit

2nd Lt. Avshera and 2nd Lt. Numen were aroused from sleep by calls to general quarters in their ship.  Neighbouring systems were being attacked in Sector 1 of the UNG.  First Acheron in the Zeta Reticuli system, then Gliese 876, and then Eden! (see: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/Sketchley/Locations/Sector1.htm and http://www.macrossroleplay.org/Sketchley/Locations/LocationImages/galacticmap.gif )

There had been a rumour in the Earth Defence Force Fleet that New Patagonia had been destroyed a few days earlier (the UNG are currently suppressing the news to prevent a civilian panic) by the Varuta.  That rumour has been all but confirmed as the attack bulletins being posted state that Varuta fleets are attacking the three UNG planets!

Ships from the Earth Defence Force Fleet are called to active duty, and fold away, in waves of ships that get progressively larger.  Everyone is tense as they all know something big is happening.  All of the ships and pilots in the Earth Defence Force are put on high alert.  It actually serves as tension breaker, as everyone feels like they are doing something, even if it is only going through the routine of putting on piloting gear, loading munitions on VFs, and warming their engines up.

Nothing happens.  An hour or so passes, and boredom sets in.  The last wave of ships folded away about one and a half hours ago.  Squads Burning Bunnie and the Rune Knights are told to take a break.  With little recourse, the members of the squads, including Avshera and Numen, watch the UNAF channel.  Perhaps there is some news on Acheron, Gliese 876, and Eden.

There isn?t; which isn?t surprising, given the news suppression surrounding the destruction of New Patagonia.  What is on the news is an update on a Petite Cola colony.  PCAC #34, specifically.  New elections are in the works, though it may take over a month to sort the election out.  Assets have been returned to the Petite Cola company, and the Thirty-Four currency that the former government of the colony put into place has been declared invalid.  Holders of the currency have been given 7 days, starting this morning at 24:00 Galactic Standard Time, to exchange the defunct Thirty-Four currency to UN currency at the market-level the currency last traded at before being removed from exchanges, one month ago.

Given it?s low value, a lot of people are certain to trade it in.  Which will make the few units of currency that collectors retain go up in value as time goes by.

The news report is interrupted by a news briefing on the fall of UN PM.  The report details that the former PM was charged with corruption and receiving bribes from the SIS, in addition to mismanaging the PCAC#34 situation, and the Eskar III crisis.  The former PM has a sound byte: ?the SIS are a law abiding, legal organization.  If we don?t engage them in the political process, they will be certain to resort to a military process!?

The new, temporary (as he hasn?t been officially elected, only nominated by his party) PM, has adopted a much more hard stance on the SIS.  His sound byte: ?The SIS are nothing more than thugs in sheep?s clothing.  Look what they did on Eskar III!  They held the civilian populace hostage while they forced a referendum on them at gun point!  Of course Eskar III voted to join the SIS!  It was do or die!  I?ve ordered the UN Spacy to increase patrols in the areas disrupted by those terrorists to maintain our sovereignty!?

The report concludes that elements of the Earth Defence Force fleet, along with handfuls of ships from a variety of planets were dispatched to the areas bordering SIS claimed territories.

Avshera and Numen can only shake their heads in understanding, as the ship redeployments started only a few days ago.  Roughly a day and a half before New Patagonia was rumoured to have been attacked.

Warning sirens interrupt the remainder of the news broadcast.  Something unexpected is defolded in a high orbit!

OOC: apologies for the point form of some of the news bulletins.  It'd take too much time and energy to give them a proper treatment... energy better spent on the post immediately following this! :D

2nd Lt. Avshera and 2nd Lt. Numen race to their respective fighters.  Just as they finish strapping in, the emergency scramble orders are lifted.

The thing that defolded is a single ship.  A UNAF Bolognese Frigate that looks like it is slightly damaged.  An image of it flashes on their cockpit screens.  Though as the camera zooms in on it, it?s obvious that the ship isn?t a UNAF ship, but one with the markings of the Britannia Colony Defence Fleet.  It?s also not damaged, but heavily modified.

The ship suddenly accelerates towards the closest part of the Earth Defence Force Fleet.  It explodes in a humongous white ball of uber reaction energy that destroys and damages hundreds, if not thousands of UNAF ships in Earth orbit.

Even inside of the cockpits of their VFs, Avshera and Numen feel the shockwave hitting their carrier ship.

The giant blast covers the defold of a rather large fleet composed mostly of Varuta Capital Ships.  Many scores of Varuta fighters launch and race in towards the unaffected parts of the Earth Defence Fleet in the hemisphere closest to their defold location.

The UNS Defence Satellites begin firing devastating salvos at the massed Varuta Fleet.  The Varuta fleet begins spreading out, firing at the UNAF ships and UNS Defence Satellites.  Explosions erupt like camera flashbulbs at a news conference.

The Varuta fighters, mostly Fz-109 Elgerzorene, dive straight towards the UNS Defence Satellites, firing missiles and gun pod bursts as they go.  They ram into the satellites, destroying both in the process!  The UNS Defensive Satellite network is quickly being eradicated, and about 1/8 of the Earth Defence Fleet is damaged or destroyed!

The Burning Bunnies and the Rune Knights are told to immediately scramble; their mission: protect the remaining UNS Defence Satellites!

About halfway through launching the squadron of 12, the ship, or at least the launch bays they are launching from, is hit!  The remainder of the squadrons still in the ship are wiped out.  2nd Lt. Avshera and 2nd Lt. Numen become de facto leaders of the remaining 5 members of their respective squadrons.

There are 4 Fz-109 heading towards 3 Defence Satellites on 2nd Lt. Avshera?s side of the ship, and 2 Fz-109 heading towards a pair of Defensive Satellites on 2nd Lt. Numen?s side of the ship.

Mid-Space Fold to Earth

Still lost in thoughts about the destruction of a world they had quite recently witnessed Mjuiri went through the "short-break-routine" mostly in zombie like state. Returning from having visited the facilities Mjuiri woke up from her zombie state as a familiar face came into view, Lt. Black. They had history, some good, some less then good. Hopefully the good outweighed the bad, but Mjuiri couldn't remember. Still seeing a familiar face was uplifting enough for her to go and greet her.

"Lt. Black? Its been a while, how are you?" Mjuiri hadn't more then spoken the greeting when her data pad alerted her to yet another incoming message. Ever since they had got back the thing went off every now and then with a report of this or that. Still she had to look. "Sorry, one moment. This thing has been beeping like crazy." She commented with a grimace as she fished the data pad up and looked over the new message.

Seeing the name of the sender Mjuiri's eyes grew larger. A message; hope. Quickly she opened it and scanend for the electronic date/time stamp. Her ears dropped towards the ground as she stared at the stamp. Too old. Absentmindedly she read the text once, twice. She would have read it a third time but a single tear landing right square in the middle of the display interrupted her. She wasn't really crying, no sobbing, just the one lone tear. She hated the SSSP. She hated them so very much. With a sneer she threw the data pad on the deck and followed up with a quick decisive stomp, shattering its display.

Looking up from the broken device, still showing half the message that had burned itself into the fractured remains of the display, she looked briefly at Black. Mjuiri's dead blue-grey eyes never showed anything, and they didn't now either. "Its nice to see you alive Lt. Sorry, but I have to go requisition a new data pad."

A couple of ships over from 2nd Lt. Avshera and 2nd Lt. Numen, 1st Lt. Taylor of the Halley's Comets had been ordered to deploy just-in-case just after the Bolognese had defolded.  Taylor had just cleared the hangar, when frigate exploded, sending his armoured VF spinning and ricocheting off of the deck (no damage).

Talyor got the VF to its feet, only to be greeted by a sky full of Varuta capital ships, all deploying Varuta VFs, and firing their main guns at the UNAF fleet in Earth's orbit.  Taylor had stood stunned by the enormity of it all.

Taylor's radio crackled to life.  "Halley's Comets!  We have 5 incoming!  Defend the bridge!"

The bridge of the Uraga was only a couple of leaps away from Taylor's current position.  There were 5 Az-130 fighters diving towards the bridge in fighter mode.  It looks like the Varuta had been sending the Fz-109 against the Defence Satellites, and the Az-130's against the ships.  The fighters were just entering 5,000 m range, and it looks like they were preparing to make a strafing run on the tower.

There is one other VF-11 Full Armour in the Halley's Comets.  The other VF-11 is somewhere close by.

OCC: is Taylor a man or a woman???

2050.04.13 Wednesday, Late Afternoon
Quinn was feeling awful. It wasn't the kind of awful that usually accompanied the hangovers or the other type of awful that drove people to name his favourite colour after. This was another kind of awful. If he could put a colour to it, it would definately have been a magenta, bright orange with brown streaks. Quinn finally knew exactly why he was feeling like this as his body burst into a bathroom and barely made it to a sink as he started wretching and coughing. "God, can't wait until I'm over this.", he thought to himself while he let the water run and splashed some in his face. He noticed the blonde hair plastering onto the handsome face in the mirror, a face strangely enough he noticed he didn't seem quite attached to. Ever since he woke up from the coma who couldn't help but get the feeling that he was changed somehow. Kind of like a passing visitor in his own body. The stranger who didn't belong.

"Mr Larson! Are you in there", a brisk knock started to accompany the shrill voice coming from the other end of the door, "Mr Larson? Is everything ok in there? Why's the door loc-." The door slid open as Quin stepped back into his infirmary room, seemingly ignoring the nurse's presence, dressed only in his  off-duty slacks and a vest. Making his way quietly to his bed, he put on his squadron jacket which had been folded moments earlier and picked up a duffel bag surrounded by the few possessions someone had managed scrounge together before New Pantagonia's bombardment.

"Mr Larson", maybe you're not too familiar with the rules here but all doors are meant to be left unlocked", started the shrilly, naggy voice that had been with Quinn every day since he'd woken up from the coma. He ignored her while he packed, occasionally looking in her direction to check if she'd stopped talking, "...furthermore I think we both know you aren't a 100% yet. If you remember, the doctor said he's only letting you out because of the current situation, but if you do get sick you should tell us so we can check-" "-for any other explanations for why I ended up in a coma. Think I've got it now", Quinn interrupted once he'd slung the single strap over his shoulder, "You know for people who really don't want people locking themselves in, it really wasn't smart putting locks on the inside you know." The nurse looked as if she was about to launch into another verbal rant when she suddenly got a peck on the cheek from Quinn who was making his way to the door, "That's for your amazing people skills." He only paused to glance at her over his shoulder and give her a wink before disappearing into the hall outside.

Quinn knew he'd missed out on quite a bit the last 2 weeks not counting the briefing which he was supposed to have attended some time today according to the data pad that used to sit next to his bed, but was now in his pocket. He passed a couple of corridors absentmindedly as he seemed occupied by something playing through his mind. He was still really unhappy that no one had bothered to visit him when he came out of the coma. Sure he didn't care much but still, the fact that no one had showed up at the hospital made it seem as if they had all resigned him to being a spiritia veggie. He really couldn't care less that he was starting to get annoyed by it and the fact that he couldn't remember anything after the telephone call. The constant ringing he been hearing since he had woken up wasn't helping him feel calmer either. He was told it would go away eventually, and never being one to take the doctors word for anything, took thet to mean forever. All he wanted to do was run into someone he knew and he started looking for the closest watering hole since that's where most people tended to drift.

2050.04.17 Sunday, Late Morning
When the call for questions came Quinn couldn't help clear his throat, "Uh? Yes sir. Well, lets say things end up getting hairy as they usually tend to sir. Will we be going in with a plan B or is this us throwing our lot in one wild attempt?"

EDIT: Made aware of continuity problems of waking up on Sunday

Earth Orbit

The general quarters klaxons went off, bringing Avshera to full wakefulness.  He was out of his bunk and moved with a purpose; suited up and to his post in record time.  Some on the ship thought he was a brown noser trying to impress the superiors during the drills; only a few knew he saw time as life ticking away and not to be wasted and that he cared nothing of what the superiors thought of him unless it dealt with his flight status.  He had only been on the ship for six months after being sent to earth ten months ago to be treated for an acute case of claustrophobia brought on from floating in his wrecked VF among his fallen squad mates and destroyed carrier for over twenty-four hours.

This time it is not a drill, as the first two planets are mentioned Avshera only wonders if any units will be sent from Earth and if so that hopefully it would be this ship.  When Eden is mentioned, he pales as a cold shiver runs down his back, Mom, Dad.  It had been over a year ago that Eden had been invaded and his parents had come out unscathed, but the rumors he has heard about New Patagonia plague his mind and turn his insides to ice.  He goes through the routine of prepping his fighter, a routine he could do blindfolded in his sleep and normally took joy in, now it was done with cold precision.  Then the wait began, would his ship fold out.  He thought of all the possible enemy craft he may face and began flying mock battles in his head, some he would win others he would die.  "There is always someone better," he says to himself as he remembers his old mentor's words of wisdom.  The Rune Knights are ordered to take a break, and he sighs as he exits his VF.

In the ready room with the others watching  the news, his Zentran blood simmers with the inactivity; waiting for news of the attacks.  There is none.  There is only talk of politics, finger pointing, the root to all conflict in Avshera's eyes, without it there would be no need for me.  The thought does little to relieve him.  The warning sirens go off and he bolts out of the ready room.

Avshera does a final tug on his straps to verify they are secure and prepares to taxi into position for launch when the scramble orders are lifted.  He clenches his teeth and pounds his helmeted head against the back of his seat.  Calm down.  You've never been this impatient before.  But mom, dad.  He watches his screen as it shows the Bolognese Frigate.  Dad can take of himself and mom, so calm down.  He takes a deep breath and exhales slowly, watching as the monitoring camera feeding him the view of the frigate zooms in.  Wait.  What are those modifications?

Then it seemed to happen in slow motion as the Frigate thrusts forward and detonates, thousands of lives cease to exist in a blink of an eye.  Avshera feels the shockwave and as his screen clears from the sensor overload he can make out Varuta Capital ships in Earth orbit filling space with fighters.  Earth defenses take another hit, he increases power to his engines and the scramble order is given to protect the Satellites.  "RUNE 5 AWAY," his VF rockets out of the launch bay followed by five others as a large volley of missiles pass overhead slamming in to the ship.  There are brief screams over the squad's channel then silence as half the squad is lost still in the launch bay.  Not again.  He breaks into a cold sweat.  Stay focused.  You're the son of a Zentran and your Mom is a mechanical genius, you have the best of both and are a natural flier.  The coldness Avshera was feeling leaves him and a smile appears on his face.  A brief glance at one of his displays show him who remained out of his squad.

"Runes Nine, Ten and Twelve.  Head for the Satellites and put up a wall of lead between them and the 109s, I don't want any missiles getting through.  Runes Six and Eight on me.  I'll hit them with a salvo, you pick up my spares, then rinse and repeat for the next wave."

Avshera's targeting computer tracks the four Fzs in front of him, ticking of the ranges as his unit closes.  He punches in the volley count and number per target, then his thumb presses the missile toggle.  A panel in the right thruster slides open and he feels the kick as eight missiles streak from their pallet towards their targets.  He watches as his missiles close in on the enemy and how the enemy reacts, then does a bounce roll into a new angle of attack, bringing his lasers to bear on the first enmy to get in his sights. He maneuvers again in an attempt to keep any enemies from getting a bead on him.

Mode: Fighter
Actions:
1: Comms
2: Target FZ 1, 2, 3 and 4, Fire volley of 8 MRMs (2 missiles targeting each FZ)
3: Moves to better angle of attack / Dodge
4: Fire linked Nacelle laser in rapid burst at FZ 1(or first survivor of missile volley)
5: Spin around for another strafe/dodge

Character: Vick Dempsey

To the now silencious team, Vick talked:

"Well, while i was with Levi in the infirmery, i had an idea about a strategy and..."

His eyes blink when he recognese someone from the two new pilots: that new guy... His studded earring give the singner the clue, because he didn't had the same haircut last time they see each other, right after that Concert on Eden... What was his name already... Forinas! Dempsey's eyes widen of surprise and desaprobation.

"Forinas? Jack Forinas From Phantom Siren Squadron? Bordel de merde, what the hell are you doing here?"
"You know you got a Good Variable Fighter when you have so much weapons that you don't have enought fingers to press all the triggers in same time!"

"Vick?!  Is that you, you sonofabitch?!"  Jack immediately embraced his former rival from his days in Phantom Siren.  "I thought we'd seen the last of each other after that concert on Eden!  Good thing you're here too!  I thought I'd have to sing to the Sultan by myself!"  Already a plan was cooking in Jack's mind, based on records of techniques used in the Macross 7- Varauta conflict.  "Up for some songs of mass destruction?"

"Wait a sec, what the hell are you doing here? I thought you where supposed to accept a big contract for a Galaxy tour with that Fire Bomber Homage group... How do you end up here in the UN Spacy intelligence?"

Jack could understand Vick's shock, but felt he deserved an explanation for once.

"I would've, but after getting captured by those Meltlandi and managing to turn them into groupies with a love ballad, UNI heard about the whole thing and signed me on with some other UNI squadron.  That one got disbanded after most of the guys got some new strain of mono, which I just didn't catch, and I was transferred here.  I know it's short notice, but I think I've got a plan for dealing with that Pheyos and a plan for making good use of those Spiritia weapons.  You in?"

"Whoa! Give yourself a break, will you? You just come out of the trainning, no? You never saw the real thing, and believe me, these thing are MUCH worst than simulation. Just four of them hit us pretty hard. anyway, we'll talk about it later... i'll be good and give a chance to the rookie: what's your idea?"
"You know you got a Good Variable Fighter when you have so much weapons that you don't have enought fingers to press all the triggers in same time!"

Jack already knew that Vick would aim at his pride, but never expected him to pull the rookie card on him!

"Well, I know that the Pheyos pilot is basically untouchable at close-range, so I thought we could try using a combination of singing and long-range attacks against him and/or her.  Also, aren't the Varuta controlled by a Protodeviln technique that can be broken using Spiritia?  If we do that, we could get them to leave the battlefield, if we're lucky.  Also, I was thinking that we might be able to further enhance the spiritia weapons by imbuing them with our spiritia before firing them.  If that doesn't work, we're both Spiritia Warfare Specialists, and can certainly take advantage of the holographic projectors to distract and attack, right?  Oh, and by the way, I managed to turn that simulated Samba into scrap on just the third try, even if it would've gone better with backup."

He just hoped he was analyzing the enemy correctly, or that he could at least contribute
