A New Beginning: Welcome to Chaerilidae

2055.08.19 Thursday 05:00 GST/ 2055.08.18 18.00 Local Time
Scorpii 18 System
Planet Buthridas
Leyte Island
Dragoon’s Nest: Combat Flight Academy
General Andrea Rossi Ampitheater

With a crash of cymbals the band ceased all noise, the sudden quiet near deafening in its instant precision.  There was a brief moment before any movement was to be seen, and then the crowd saw him.  General Arthur P. Brown, Commandant of the Dragoon’s Nest and the man in charge of the training and education of all pilots in The Spike.  He had served with distinction in the brief action against Psi-Serpentis 3 and the Yellow Main Consortium three years before just outside of 18 Scorpii.  The Three Spheres had sent out a search and rescue team to the remains of a Meltran Gunship that was wrecked on a passing comet.  Upon arrival General Brown’s detachment found Psi-Serpentis carrier with YMC markings looting the wreckage and taking Meltran prisoners.  General Brown made the difficult decision of enforcing The Three Spheres sovereign territory and risked all out war with the YMC.  The YMC refused to back down and the Expeditionary Fleet and YMC carrier group engaged for twenty minutes, both sides suffering losses.

Just when things were looking dire, the Meltran fleet that the gunship belonged to showed up to rescue their crew, and the YMC was forced to withdraw.  The EF harassed the YMC tenders that were hauling away prisoners and Q-Rau’s and prevented them from withdrawing, a consequence that to this day has led to strained relations between the YMC and the Three Spheres.  The Meltran Fleet, however, was very grateful, and three destroyers full of Meltran left the fleet to settle on Agrabuamelu.  In recognition of his steadfast resolve and sound decision making, General Brown received an accommodation and a new assignment training the future officers of The Three Spheres.

And now General Arthur P. Brown had the distinction of addressing seven hundred twenty six men and women, pilots and technicians, graduates all.  Five training squadrons had started out four years ago with two hundred personnel each, and in those four years the numbers had thinned to a core of iron hearted and intelligent people.  General Brown looked out upon them, and began, “Ladies and Gentlemen of the graduating class of 2055, I welcome you to your commencement ceremony.  We stand here today…”

As the ceremony progressed all present were filled with a sense of accomplishment and awe.  Moreover, they began to realize just what they had accomplished, and how much more they would find themselves responsible for.  While not a people at war, the Three Spheres were completely independent of the N.U.N. and there were no ends to pirates and rival nations that wanted what they had.  The men and women sitting next to them stood between their homes and the destructive and chaotic forces of the universe.

Pride filled the graduates as their names were called, and their assignments issued.  While many had the scores and leadership to be nominated to attend Chaerilidae, up until this very moment they had no idea if they were actually admitted.  One hundred proud engineering students heard their names called.  Twenty four steel nerved pilots responded with smiles and nods.  Twelve sharp eyed EWO’s felt their confidence in their pilots justified, their own efforts rewarded.  The best of the best.  There was no question that those names called would be the greatest The Three Spheres had to offer in a conflict.

“You all have your assignment,” General Brown declared.  “Serve with pride, serve with distinction.  Chaerilidae personnel, you ship out tomorrow at 2700 hours local time.  Pilots and EWO’s, you will escort the engineers aboard the Snetter.  You will be joined by the senior students and move to the Chaerilidae.  Class of 2055, you are hereby dismissed until 1200 hours local tomorrow.  Congratulations!”

There was a raucous cheer from all the students and the band once again struck a beat.  The noise lasted for nearly half an hour as the students and their families met in the center of the amphitheater to congratulate them for all of their accomplishments.  It was a time to celebrate.

CDT Nilke "Red One" Dalkarn
The driver

Nilke could still feel the distinct taste of adrenaline inside her mouth as she got started on making her way to the seats reserved to the EWO candidates shortly after the General'd dismissed them. Most of all, the red-haired pilot felt ecstatic. With all the ruckus that followed the stunt she'd pulled a couple months earlier, landing her fighter under some decidedly cruddy weather conditions after being told not to do so by the fellas over at the Nest's control tower, Nilke'd feared that both Alma and herself wouldn't be allowed to attend Chaerilidae no matter what their grades were. Not that she'd shared any of those concerns with anyone, of course, not even her sister. Especially her sister.

A broad smile locked on her face, Nilke continued to move in the direction of the EWO seats, her progress slowed down somewhat by the multitude of uniformed graduates that were busy talking to each other or making their way to their families' seats. Some of Nilke's fellow, less-fortunate cadets had her stop from time to time, shaking hands with the red-haired pilot, patting her back as they congratulated her over making it to advanced training onboard the Chaerilidae. And, while she thanked them effusively, all she wanted to do right that moment was to share the moment with Alma.

CDT Alma "Red Two" Dalkarn
The EWO

Waiting amongst the men and women that'd been trained to master the electronic warfare gear available to two-seater fighters alongside her, Alma let out a sigh of relief upon listening to General Brown calling out her sister's name. While being found capable of taking advanced training onboard Chaerilidae by the brass was important to Alma, ultimate proof that all the hard work'd finally paid off, she knew just how vital that was to Nilke.

A smile appeared on Alma's face as the General called out her name before long, and she joined in on the joyous cheers once he dismissed their class. They'd graduated. She turned to look at the friends she'd made amongst those that'd chosen to pursue a career as an EWO, and after a brief session of congratulating each other, Alma excused herself. She really wanted to see Nilke.

A few moments later, the twins found one another. They looked at each other for a moment prior to embracing in a tight hug. And despite Alma's efforts to hold the tears at bay, she began crying as her chin came to rest on Nilke's shoulder. Her sister looked happier than ever, after listening to General Brown giving her a shot to truly excel at what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

"I told you we'd make it." Nilke whispered in her sister's ear, her arms tightly wrapped around Alma.

"...yeah." Alma said between sobs, the smile on her face never leaving her. She'd often wondered as to what was it that had imbued Nilke with such an seemingly unfaltering sense of self-confidence, and despite the fact that it'd gotten them in trouble a few times by then, it'd always provided Alma with a feeling of safety, that they'd make it through no matter how difficult things became.

"Shall we go see mom and dad?" Nilke asked as she let go of her sister after a moment, wiping what remained of her tears away with the back of her hand. Alma nodded as her sister took her hand and started leading her to the portion of the theater occupied by the graduates' families, arriving after a few minutes' walk. Their father, Lester, was standing next to Coral, their mother, wearing the kind of clothes he always wore when not working at the noodle shop. It was a brown leather jacket, and a pair of worn jeans. As usual, he was sporting that friendly smile of his, while their mother appeared a lot more serious.

And that wasn't all there was to it. Both sisters were shocked upon noticing that their mother was donning her old Meltran fleet uniform. The same uniform that Nilke'd always pleaded for her to put on as they grew up.

A puzzled-looking Alma and a frowning Nilke walked over to where their parents stood. And, before either twin could ask their mother as to what was going on, Lester spoke. "So... where are your salutes? You're standing before a higher-ranking officer." He'd never agreed to his daughters' career choice, but he'd come to terms with that, comforted in that they'd entered military life by choice and not by design, as had been his case once upon a time.

As if on cue, both sisters stood at attention and saluted their mother, who did the same prior to letting a broad smile appear on her face.

"Congratulations." Coral said, and it wasn't long enough before Nilke and Alma were chuckling and hugging their mother.

At the end of the commencement, Arsene stood in a sea of white. The soon-to-be former cadets received their wings with a salute.

The new naval aviators in Arsene's section shot to their feet, having dreamed of this moment for the last four years. No more pencils, no more books. No more teachers, dirty looks. School's out. But for Ens. Arsene St. Louis, school would just begin with his appointment to Chaerilidae, which would make the flight academy look like Boy Scout Camp.

"Class of 2055, you are hereby dismissed until 1200 hours local tomorrow.  Congratulations!”

"Hoo-ya!" The squids barked in unison, before removing their white covers, with the plain cadets' band device, and throwing them into the air. With the dismissal, the hardened graduates turned to hug one another, and walked off to find parents, girlfriends and siblings.

"Fils, Nous sommes ici," came the familiar voice of his mother Genevieve. She wasn't native French exactly, but was professionally, and had married into a small band of survivors. The dinner tonight would be perfect, but for now, she was glad to see her son's graduation.

Feeling a bit ostentatious speaking his native tongue, Charles St. Louis grabbed his son's hand. "You have done it son. You have your wings and commission and will continue our family legacy."

Arsene supposed he was a second generation pilot, knowing little of his family before the war. His father presented him with a book of his Grandfather and Great Grandfather who both served on the Foch and Clemceau. One as a Super Etendard pilot, the eldest as plane captain.

The youngest St. Louis in the navy had his hand grabbed by his uncle and mentor Sebastian. He thought it was just a shake, but found a pair of small objects. The collar device of a French ensign, and a pair of French Naval Aviator's wings. "The stripes were my first. The wings your father's. Don't wear them outside your uniform, but keep them, pour la chance."

Charles and Genevieve beamed at their son, then through their around the tall and stoic young man. Arsene, taken aback, returned the hug.

"Come on Arsene, we have a feast planned. We have all your favourites, I think," said Charles. "Any idea where you will be posted and when you will go?"

"Oui Papa. Chaerilidae. We deploy at 2700."

Charles and Sebastian had trouble with the long day, and were going to correct the boy for incorrectly reporting time. Then they remembered he was a new sailor and a new aviator in a new navy on a new world.

"You've made us proud, Arsene," Sebastian D'Artagnan said.

"Thanks. I want you to meet a friend. She was in my training element. I taught her to play football, she's a decent midfielder," said Arsene as he led the small throng of French family towards a pair of scarlett-headed Ensigns.

"Allo Nilke! Allo Alma!" He had the strangest ability of telling them apart, even from the moment they met. If ever pressed to explain, he would be tonguetied.

Elation?

Graduation.  It was a ceremony of elation and pride for everyone here, a new graduating class to join the ranks of the Three-Spheres military, the first and last line of defense for every man, woman,  and child of the planets.  To ensure safety from piracy, anarchists, warlords, and other threats that would threaten the safety of a small nation like the Three Spheres.  Lance understood the pride of people here but why the elation? Why were people excited at the prospect of graduation from military academies into active military forces where life and death hung in a cruel balance?

Amongst the limited number of honors students since the Three Spheres had high standards for their honors students stood Lance, his cadet dress uniform carrying the laurels of an honor student, his gaze serious as he listened to the speeches, the congratulations, he blinked in surprise at learning his assignment to the Chaerilidae but...also felt...excited?   Lance blinked heavily at that.  He was excited at getting such a very rare opportunity?  He shifted and glanced at Nilke and gave her a victory sign since she was closeby and then looking for Alma gave her a victory sign as well having heard the twins names called soon after his own.

Melody "Angel" Winters
Happy to see him making something of himself.

It took a bit of searching to find Lance in the ranks of the other pilots, at the sight of him in that uniform, with the laurels on him where she didn't see on as many she smiled even more.  She assumed that it had meant he had done some real good in his years at the academy.  Lance's manager smiling happily at the sight of someone she had helped raise take on a more serious lifestyle.  The woman was gorgeous, beautiful, had the looks of someone who always attended to her appearance though had a natural beauty to work with.  She was listening to the speech given by some very official looking man who looked to be very high-ranking.  Melody never had a keen interest in military affairs, and even with Lance in the military now only had interest in him.

Lieutenant Commander (Ret.) Arthur "Ghost" Ryland
Totally smug.

Nice work Lance, I knew you had it in you to make it.

Arthur thought to himself as he was sitting beside a gorgeous blond who he briefly remembered was Lance's manager.  He glanced at Melody briefly.  "He's turned out pretty good hasn't he?" Arthur asked now to which Melody could only give an amused smile.

"I'm almost sad to see him graduate already," Melody said calmly now.  "He's no longer that little kid who always came to me when a problem came up or he didn't get something," she admitted softly.  Arthur gave a nod now and a small grin.

"He'll be fine.  We've done all we can for him now it's time for him to step out into the world and make something of himself." Arthur commented to which Melody could only nod in agreement now and smile very happily.

The graduation ceremony had eventually winded down with General Brown finally giving his final words and congratulations as Lance just smiled happily and with a bit of pride he stood up with the others as people began looking for parents with Lance standing in one of the few open spots as he felt arms come around him from behind.  At a mere five foot four inches Lance was among the shortest of graduate pilots and he was noticeably several inches shorter then the gorgeous blond who looked down at him with a smile.  Lance's smile brightened immediately eyes sparkling with a bit of happiness.

"You came," Lance said softly.

"I wouldn't have missed this for anything," Melody said with a wink as Arthur came around getting something out of his pocket.

"Well Lance it looks like you have the start of an exciting career going, I want you to have something I've been saving for you," Arthur commented as he handed Lance a framed photo of Lance's ROTC class back in high-school.  "Just a little something so you remember just how far you've come along."

Lance touched it and gave a nod as he stepped out of Melody's arms briefly and with one precise movement he saluted Arthur.

"I won't let you down sir."

Lester Dalkarn
A warrior turned cook

Lester's smile grew wider as he wrapped his arms around his daughters, his gaze resting on their manes of blood-red coloured hair as Nilke and Alma buried their faces against his massive chest. It wasn't all that difficult for his mind to travel back to that moment when he'd held them both in his arms, back inside the hospital where they were born. Despite the culturing he'd gone through by then, how familiar he'd become to all ways human, he sure'd felt amazed at how small they were back then. And, even if neither of them had grown tall enough to look into his eyes without tilting their heads up, Lester would always remember -and treasure- that day in the hospital's ward. The first time he'd held them.

The massive Zentran turned to look at Coral, who smiled back at him and placed her hand on his right shoulder.

After a moment, both Nilke and Alma pulled away from him, broad smiles on their faces.

"So... where shall we go have dinner?" He said, reaching for the side of Alma's face and wiping the streaks left by tears that were still visible on her cheeks with his thumb. That done, he brought his hand to his chin, assuming a posture of someone that was deep in thought. "It's been a while ever since we were in the capital, but I know a noodle shop nearby that's very good..."

"Daaaad!" Nilke piped in, looking as if she didn't agree with her father's suggestion. "...not noodles!" Alma said nothing, of course. but it was the very reaction he'd been looking for from his eldest daughter. Lester chuckled for a moment prior to speaking again.

"Alright, alright. You two'll have to guide us to a restaurant where we can have a nice dinner then." In preparation for his daughters' graduation, he'd been putting some money aside for the last couple months, so he wasn't overly worried about the check. It was time to celebrate.

ENS Nilke "Red One" Dalkarn
The driver

Nilke smiled and nodded upon listening to her father chuckle and offering them to lead their parents to a restaurant that wasn't a noodle shop. Her objections hadn't been brought about by her wanting to eat the fancy -not to mention, pricey- kind of food. It was just that, as daughter to the owner to a small noodle shop, she'd eaten enough noodles to last her a lifetime by then. She knew that Alma didn't think too highly of those either, but she'd never say as much.

Listening to a familiar voice calling out to them, both Alma and Nilke turned around and noticed Arsene as he approached them, closely followed by his family.

Nilke smiled as she spoke up. "So, you made it into Chaerilidae too, huh?" Her smile was as broad as before, but it had a bit of a devilish look to it, the kind of smile that she always sported whenever engaged in mischief. "Think that maybe someone made a mistake someplace, and scribbled your name on the wrong list?" The red-haired pilot winked at Arsene prior to talking again, and extending her hand to shake his. "Congratulations, Ensign."

Alma chuckled prior to speaking up. While she was nowhere as extroverted as her sister, she'd known Arsene long enough for her to open up to him somewhat. "Nilke and I always thought you'd make it into advanced training, you know?"

The red-haired pilot's head swiveled to look at her sister almost instantly. "Almaaaa..." she objected, feeling a bit embarrassed about her sister telling Arsene what she -privately- thought about the guy's skills at flying a VF. In a very schoolgirl-like gesture, Alma brought her hand up to cover her mouth as she giggled a little. A not-so-pleased Nilke turned to introducing him to their parents.

"Arsene, these are our parents. Lester and Coral Dalkarn."

Arsene snapped to attention upon seeing Mrs. Dalkarn, then nodded politely. He was neither covered nor under arms, so saluting would be inappropriate from a naval point of view.

"I heard something about food," said Geneveve. "We are having a dinner for Arsene. My staff and I will serve at the Millwood Hotel's Zephyr Meeting Room. We hired a room there. It would be a pleasure if Arsene's friends and their family would join us in our celebration." She had a clipped and formal way of speaking. Though her accent was once the milquetoast homogeny of the Japanese and American common to most "new" people, a flavor of Parisian was rapidly overtaking the blandness.

Arsene blushed at his mother's invitation, but he would like to have dinner with Nilke. Alma was a friend too, and meeting their family would be fun. He could imagine his father and Mrs. Dalkarn swapping old war stories. Hopefully the elder St. Louis would not go hard on the wine and make a fool of himself.

"Yeah, I ended up at Chaerilidae, too. I suppose they did not get my application for the Naval Football Club. It has to be a mistake," he laughed aloud, but in his heart, he still wished he was running onto a pitch instead of running into a battle. "Congratulations to you both. Nilke, you are still a maniac, but you can be my wingman any day." He gladly shook Red 1's hand and smiled to Alma.

The banter between the two made Arsene bluse a bit brighter. His Gallic complection hid little and now his cheeks were brighter than his Meltrandi friends' hair. "You guys are pretty good too, and deserve Chaerilidae more than me." He believed it too. He was a footballer, not a pilot. But he looked back to his father and uncle. He carried their aspirations now, and would make the best of it.

"It is good to meet you," Arsene said to acknowlege the elder Dalkarns. "I present my mother and father, Genevieve and Charles St. Louis, and my oncle and godfather Sebastian D'Artagnian."

Ensign Lance "Gemini" Callaeros
A little nervous.

Lance paused for a moment as Arthur left to go swap stories with some of the officers here and he looked up at Melody giving one more smile.  He put his hands in his pockets and felt something remembering instantly what he meant to give the twins today.

"Something wrong?" Melody asked noticing Lance looking around till his eyes spotted the twins and Arsene, and their respective families.

"Mmm, just need to do something that's all," Lance said softly as he felt the item out in his pocket carefully working something so it was how he meant it to be.  He shifted taking a deep breath now calming himself, the twins made him nervous sometimes and having to do this in front of all those people.  He let out an exhale and moved his boots making a sharp sound against the ground as he approached the twins blocking out all others in this very moment.

"Excuse me," Lance said carefully working himself right in.  He didn't have social graces all the time and was not exactly...charismatic unless he was acting out a role.  He shifted and stood in front of them and carefully put something in each of the twins hands closing their own hands around it now.  Lance was more then a little nervous, he had taken the time to carefully pick out this gift and get it detailed and engraved just for them.  He was hoping they liked it and that the parents would forgive him for his abruptness.

"I...kinda got you two something not sure if we'd get the same assignment," Lance mumbled now as he rubbed the back of his head a bit nervously and looked down at the ground.  He had been in the same dormitory as the twins, well they had one more an EWO that worked with Lance, but Lance and the twins had shared classes all the years at the Academy becoming a friendly classmate trio almost.  He had opened up to the twins where nobody else had been able to pry him open.  When Alma and Nilke looked each  would have a silver chain necklace but it was what was attached to the necklace that was the real gift.

In each of the twins hands lay one half of a pair of aviator wings deliberately divided down the middle.  It was a beautiful pair of wings a design that had been popular ages ago when humanity was first braving the skies in prop planes in daring dog-fights.  The detailing was fine and extremely well-crafted suggesting it was done by hand rather then just something you'd find out of a shop.  It was the back though that really was the touching part, engraved on Alma's half was 'Dream' and on Nilke's half was 'One'.  Lance scoffed the tip of his shoe lightly now into the ground.  Closer inspection showed that the wings could be put together as a single piece.  Lance had gotten the wings like that since the twins shared not only the same fighter as a Pilot/RIO pair but also because they shared a common set of goals and dreams.  So if the twins put their halves together they had 'One Dream' completely unbroken and in a beautiful cursive script.

"Congratulations on the assignment to the Chaerilidae by the way," Lance murmured out gently.

Melody "Angel" Winters
Very surprised.

Melody blinked in surprise at Lance approaching that small group of people and even braving the fact that eyes would be on him and he was interrupting a conversation.  She smiled gently at how he looked at the twins, just the look he gave...they were friends of his.  She warmed up immediately to the fact that Lance had made a pair of friends that he trusted as she calmly approached.   Melody dressed in a professional looking black business suit with white silk shirt underneath the suit jacket, her black heels making that distinctive sound on the flooring as she carefully watched the scene from nearby.

And here I was thinking he kept to himself all these years.  Good for you Lance.

CDT Hayden "Apollo" Grimm
Quiet and Calculating

Hayden listened to the speech given during their graduation ceremony and his mind was dwelling on his family and their absence.  He had received a message earlier from them and it read that they were not going to be able to make it due to duty and they were sending him their congratulations for his accomplishment.  He smiled inside but outwardly, he was cold as usual, showing little to no emotion.

Once they were released, Hayden looked around at the various groups that were forming and the cadets that moved to their families and decided to get out of the way.  He moved towards the wall and shook hands with others as he went.  He had made acquaintances during his four year stay and knew he would miss them but that was part of growing up.  He finally got clear of the bulk of the students and looked at the wings in his hand and the assignment to the Chaerilidae was an honor.  Mom...I really wish you and dad could have been here...

Hayden was lost in thought until he heard a few voices he recognized.  He turned and saw the Dalkarn twins and Arsene and even Lance, all chatting amongst themselves.  He smiled at the sight and realized that these were going to be his team mates for a while and also realized that this assignment was going to be anything but dull.  He would nod to any that looked his way and try to hide his obvious disappointment of his family's absence.

Coral Dalkarn
The wildebeast

Despite the fact that a quick inspection on the bathroom mirror their hotel room was equipped with had revealed that she still looked good in her old uniform, Coral wasn't all that comfortable, feeling a bit as if it'd shrunk in size a little since the last time she'd donned it. It'd been a little over two decades ever since she'd last put her old uniform on, though, and the former Q-Rau pilot found that thought helpful at appeasing her somewhat guilty conscience over letting her life as a civilian get to her.

Not that her figure mattered much at the time. An immense feeling of pride washed over Coral as she looked at her daughters, that looked radiant and beautiful, their uniforms bringing back memories of her time as a pilot. Part of her longed to go up into the skies and tangle just like during the good old days, as happened from time to time, but she pushed that feeling away. Whether she liked it or not, those times'd come and gone, and she had no regrets. Especially now.

Noticing that the mother to her daughters' friend was addressing them, Coral turned to look at the woman. The red-haired Meltran frowned and quirked an eyebrow as she moved half a step closer to her, having a bit of difficulty understanding what she was saying. Coral'd never heard such an accent before, that was for certain. Her mannerisms and the way the woman spoke didn't sit all too well with the former Q-Rau pilot, but she knew better than to openly say so, as she would've done once upon a time.

Putting a polite smile on her face, Coral waited until the time came to speak again, as their children were talking to one another and she didn't want to interrupt them.

ENS Nilke Dalkarn
The driver

Having stretched Arsene's hand effusively, Nilke took a step back and came back to stand next to her father, with Alma at her side. The red-haired pilot chuckled upon Arsene calling her a maniac, feeling a sting of pride upon him telling her that he wouldn't mind having her as a wingman anyday. That comment certainly made her forget about the mild embarrassment she'd felt Alma letting him know what she thought about his skills inside the cockpit a moment earlier.

Before she could voice a reply however, Arsene turned to introducing his parents and god-father. Nilke shook hands with each of them, closely followed by Alma.

"Nice to meet you too." both sisters said at exactly the same time. And, as to be expected, neither twin gave any mind to speaking in synch.

Noticing Lance as he walked in their direction, Nilke frowned as she turned to look at the blonde-haired pilot. Well aware of the rivalry between Arsene and Lance, not to mention his shy nature, she would've expected him to wait for Arsene to leave prior to approaching them. That train of thought made the red-haired pilot tilt her head to the side, obviously curious as to what he had in mind.
The surprises didn't end at that though, as a nervous-looking Lance cut into the conversation and handed a gift to both her and Alma afterwards.

She looked down at the half of the antique-looking pilot wings Lance'd given her, admiring it for a moment before her gaze moved up to meet Lance's. "This is a wickedly cool present!" she said, a broad smile on the red-haired pilot's face. "Thanks!"

Nilke then held the necklace by the chain with both her hands and put it on. She'd never had much interest in necklaces, wristchains and all the stuff that made most girls happy, but a pair of vintage aviator wings were an entirely different thing. Deciding to toss all the crap about uniform's regulations and whatnot outta the window, she didn't tuck it under her uniform's shirt but left it there, where it was readily visible. It's graduation day, for Pete's sake.. Nilke thought.
The red-haired pilot looked down at Lance's present one last time prior to wrapping her arms around the blonde pilot, giving him a bear hug.

"Thanks." she said prior to stepping away from the hug, that broad smile of hers still on her face. "And congrats about making it into Chaerilidae." Nilke then turned to look at her parents. "Mom, dad.. this is Lance. Lance, these are Lester and Coral Dalkarn, our parents."

ENS Alma Dalkarn
The EWO

Having spotted Lance making their way towards them at about the same time as Nilke had, Alma was surprised to see him, and even more when he started talking. She knew how difficult it was for him to engage in conversation with others, and she liked how had he chosen to put all that aside to join them, despite of Arsene's presence, whom she knew wasn't his favourite person throughout basic training.

She soon found herself holding a lovely-looking silver necklace in her hand, with half an old-looking aviator's wings hanging from it. Alma looked up at Lance, a slight trace of red covering her cheeks. She soon emerged from her stupor, upon listening to her sister thanking Lance for them.

"Th... thanks!" she said at him.

Relieved that they like it.

He was smiling a little but the smile brightened even more at the pleased reactions from the twins he flushing hotly when he felt Nilke suddenly bear-hug him giving a nervous little eep and hugging back briefly.  When Nilke let go he rubbed the back of his head even further his blush getting a little deeper.  A smile on his lips as he looked up at them and gave a nod now.  "Y-yeah I was kind of surprised at the sudden posting to the Chaerilidae I mean..." he rubbed the back of his head realizing people's eyes were on him words dying on his lips.  He had given the gift and was losing some of that solid steel nerve that had made him approach the group in the first place.

"Well...I'm glad you two like the gift," he said hastily trying not to stumble over his own words too much.  "I wanted to find something special since graduation day only comes once," he murmured as his eyes began following the pattern of the tile and he heard Nilke speaking once more.

"Mom, dad.. this is Lance. Lance, these are Lester and Coral Dalkarn, our parents."

Lance blinked his nervousness distracted for a moment.  Looking up at the Dalkarns he blinked at their mother's uniform and as a reaction his boots clicked together in a smart precise move that had been very well-practiced.  His hand came up in a prefect salute in respect to Coral Dalkarn.

That explains where they got their inspiration...and...where Nil and Alma got their cute looks from.  I bet the smile they got from their dad...

Briefly almost briefly Lance's eyes darted through the crowd to try and find something he knew would never show.  He had cut ties with his parents and that was that.  Lance did however give a nod and friendly wave at Hayden spotting him nearby now. Lance looked up at Lester and Coral Dalkarn flashing his 'lethal weapon' a dazzling smile that was just unfair.

"It's an honor to meet you both," Lance said softly and in Zentreadi his accent quite beautiful when he spoke it. Lance meeped when he felt an arm around his shoulders and he looked up at Melody who hadn't missed how Lance's eyes searched and she patted his head lightly.

"And this is Melody my older sister," Lance added hastily in English now.

Melody "Angel" Winters
He's so cute when he's nervous.

The blond haired woman smiled gently at the Dalkarn Twins and their parents.

"Lance speaks very highly of you two from the e-mails he sent me during those academy years I'm glad he met you two," Melody commented with a smile at the twins and Lance's flushed only deepened a bit more as he scoffed his shoe on the floor again.  Melody giving a very polite inclination of her head to Coral and Lester.  "Pleased to meet you both as well," Melody continued as she felt Lance relax a little since he didn't have to speak as much knowing that Melody could speak for him if needed.

Something else was on her mind.  She hadn't missed one of the twins blushing.

Hmmmm is there something going on that he hadn't told me?

Ensign Lance "Gemini" Callaeros
One more thought on his mind.

Where's Zeliha anyways?  I haven't seen her since this morning during the rush to get ready for the ceremony.

Ensign Hayden "Apollo" Grimm
Quiet and Calculating

Hayden noticed the nod from Lance and it made him smile at the gesture.  Lance was one of the few cadets that he respected most.  There was some kind of unspoken kinship between them and it always brought a smile to his always cold exterior.  not wanting to unsocial in this momentous occasion, Hayden walked over to the group and greeted them.

"Lance, Arsene, and of course ladies...Congratulations on graduation."

He gave them all a slight bow of respect and when he made eye contact with Alma and Nilke's mother, he snapped too and gave her a crisp salute.

"Ma'am."

ENS Zeliha Kragl
Tallest EWO there ever was

Zeliha patiently waited with the other electronic warfare officers as the graduation ceremony went through its steps. She kept her face emotionally flat as she let her eyes drift over her fellow cadets. As had been the case through most of the academy, she found herself one of the tallest cadets present. It was no surprise, really. Cockpits were designed to be compact, and compact people fit the best within them. She furrowed her brow for a short instant, oblivious to the speech the general was giving as her thoughts drifted. A cockpit was a far cry from the unrestrained depths of the ocean.

Her attention was snapped back to reality when she heard Lance's name called. How about that – little brother made it. She smiled softly as her eyes drifted over to the honors section. Stoic as ever. Lance deserved the chance, he was a good kid and seemed pleased with his choices. Zeliha's smile faded - Lance may have deserved the chance, but he seemed quite sheltered. The military would send him reeling or he'd adapt and overcome it. Hopefully the latter.

Again, she returned to reality when she heard a name. Zeliha turned her eyes to the podium, like a student caught daydreaming in class before it dawned on her. She arched an eyebrow as a look of astonishment crept over her face. She had joined the military to fulfill a tradition, she didn't think she would be raising the bar on the tradition.  Her mind raced, was she raising the bar? Her eyes went wide after her mental gymnastics, she indeed was.

Zeliha stood in place, oblivious to the cheering as the concept sinked into her mind. Then, to any lucky enough to witness, they would see Zeliha suddenly become small. A small the likes of which only an even taller father inspired when surprising his only daughter with a bear hug. Ompoly laughed at the squeak his daughter let out, stepping back with a large smile on his face. Zeliha turned in time to see Iryna, her mother, comically scowl at Ompoly before playfully backhanding his right shoulder.

“Ah yes,” Ompoly begain in Zentradi, “I am afraid I spoiled how your mother wished to greet you!” He looked over to Iryna, rubbing his shoulder in feigned pain.

“As always.” Iryna said in a cool and level voice with a calm expression before reaching out and touching Ompoly in specific spots.

“Aaeeh!” Perhaps more comical was the sight of such a huge Zentran jumping away from Iryna, who was the smallest of the three, “No tickling!” His wife and daughter both broke into giggles and laughter, to which he soon joined.

“Come, now.” Iryna calmed herself and patted her husband's back, “Let us show Zeliha proper respect.”

The couple came to attention, Zeliha quick to follow suit and first to offer salute. Her parents wore their old uniforms, Ompoly that of a ship's commander and Iryna that of a pilot officer. Formalities over, they greeted with proper hugs and smiles. Her younger brother, Katakin, even ran to her with a hug and well wishes.

Out of the corner of her eye, Zeliha spotted the bright red hair that could only belong to the Twins that Lance frequently accompanied. Good girls, if a bit mischevious. With a bit of sexual tension. “Come, I will introduce you to my classmates.”

Zeliha closed the distance calmly, straight faced as she greeted Lance with a level voice in perfect English, “Ah. So here is where little brother busies himself.” She glanced around the group, “Lance Callaeros, my pilot; Alma and Nilke Dalkarn, Arsene St. Louis, and Hayden Grimm.”

She knew some better than others, but had good enough fortune to remember all of their names, “Graduates, these are my parents, Ompoly and Iryna.”

Her parents nodded, “Congratulations, ensigns. I know you will add to the glory of the Interstellar Lookouts.” Ompoly's basso voice easily cutting through the murmur of the surrounding celebrations.

The playfulness displayed around their daughter was gone, replaced by the coolness of time served in the military.

“Yes, congratulations.” Iryna chimed in, her voice more melodic.

Zeliha set about offering individual congratulations, greeting each in turn.

“It seems you are paired with me for a while longer, little brother.” Zeliha said to Lance with a grin, ruffling his hair.

Arsene dutifully introduced his fellow Chaerilidae attendees to his family, when Charles stood up. "Attention please," he asked in his thick Parisian accent. "Please your attention please."

Genevieve saw the young man introduced as Lance Calleros had no family. As a clone herself, she could relate. ""Excuse me, Ens. Calleros, would you allow me and my husband to sponsor you with my son 'Lupin' at the party?"

Arsene glared. His mother was taking in his rival at HIS party, and she also used the nickname he never cared for. He was no thief. "Mama', I asked you not to call me this in front of my friends. I do not steal."

"Arsene, fille!" said Genevieve. "These are your friends, and we should make them welcome too!"

"Oui, mama" said a defeated Arsene, who could never oppose his mother.

"Thank you for your attention," said Charles. "Since you are all assigned to the same path as Lupin, then you are part of his family, and you are part of our family. We have a reception planned for our son and his schoolmates that we wish you, and your friends and your parents would attend."

Arsene mostly just wanted the Reds to come. He did not mind Zeliha, or "Thing" Grimm. But his mother's invitation to Callaros was too much. "Mère, il n'est pas mon ami et je ne le veux pas à ma partie !"

"Il n'a aucun famille, et ainsi, nous serons son famille!" said a defiant Genevieve.

"Non!" said Arsene.

"Oui, et ne dites pas plus."

"Oui, mama," sighed Arsene. "Backstreet? My mother would really like you to attend MY party. So please be there." He crossed his arms and huffed a bit before looking around and seeing the rest of his friends having a good time.

Arsene approcahed Grimm for a bit of horseplay. "It's clobberin' time," he said before throwing a few stage punches to his midsection, then throwing him a hug. Europeans were far more personable than other cultures. "Congratulations to you, mon ami. I am glad you will remain with us, even if you bring your twin along! Ens. Grimm, you have made the big grade!"

Arsene turned to Zeliha and saluted. "You've made your commission and been near to the head of the class. I thank you for your expertise and friendship. And with the rest of the Chaerilide class of this year, I would invite you to our feast and hope you will join us."

The swarthy frenchman from San Tropez had a brown complection, and a full white smile. His physique as a savateur was still chisled even into the early 70's or late 60's. He was every bit a George Hamilton from the Rivera.

"I think Madamoisselle Winters should come with us, since she is a part of this family," the wily old cuss said.

"Oh yes, oui," said Genevieve. "She is the boy's sister, but you should not be so crass!"

Upon introduction to Grimm, Sebastian spoke again. His accent was subtlely different than the St. Louises, which some might notice. He noticed the young ensign was also without parents, but decided to follow the custom Charles and Genevieve started. "Yes, this is good. I would like to be your sponsor at the dinner, if you will be attending. You are very welcome with us, if Arsene doesn't break your neck with his wild celebrating, this is."

Sebastian lost his family like everyone else in the war. Since then, Charles had been all there was. Then Genevieve, then "little" Arsene.  It would be only right to adopt Arsene's classmates and help them form into a family. Arsene was showing bad habits by singling out a peer for scorn, which could be fatal to one or both in combat. Making these kids into a team and a family would be the best way to keep them alive. A dinner might be just what it took to get them over the hump.

Ensign Hayden "Apollo" Grimm
Quiet and Calculating

As Hayden relaxed his hand from the salute of the Dalkarn's mother, another familiar voice was heard.  He turned to see Zeliha approaching with her family in tow.

“Ah. So here is where little brother busies himself....Lance Callaeros, my pilot; Alma and Nilke Dalkarn, Arsene St. Louis, and Hayden Grimm.”

Hayden nodded to them and offered a slight bow as he was introduced.  Formalities were something his mother taught him to show respect.

“Congratulations, ensigns. I know you will add to the glory of the Interstellar Lookouts.”

“Yes, congratulations.”

Hayden was listening to Zel's parent congratulating them when his attention was turned elsewhere.

"Attention please,...Please your attention please."

"Excuse me, Ens. Calleros, would you allow me and my husband to sponsor you with my son 'Lupin' at the party?"

Noticing the expression on Arsene's face by this gesture offered up by his mother, Hayden didn't really react.  He watched as Arsene and his parent's went back and forth in French discussing it before he obviously conceded.

"Backstreet? My mother would really like you to attend MY party. So please be there."

Hayden thought about Arsene's dilemma for a moment and a smile cracked across his lips.  You gotta know that parents will always win when it comes to debating the small stuff...  Just then he was snapped back to reality by a few mach punches to the mid-section and a familiar French accent.

"It's clobberin' time,"

As Arsene threw his arms around him, Hayden was in a state of shock by this.  "Wha...?"

"Congratulations to you, mon ami. I am glad you will remain with us, even if you bring your twin along! Ens. Grimm, you have made the big grade!"

"Twin...?"  Hayden thought about it for a moment but came up with nothing.  He instead smiled.  "Thank you...I think."

Just as he had managed to get those words out, he heard another male voice and it was accented quite differently than Arsene or his parents.

"Yes, this is good. I would like to be your sponsor at the dinner, if you will be attending. You are very welcome with us, if Arsene doesn't break your neck with his wild celebrating, this is."

A little embarrassed by their hospitality, Hayden turned to face Sebastian and then lowered his gaze.

"I thank you for your kind offer sir.  My parents were kept away by their duty to the Lookout.  I...really must decline.  If you will excuse me."

Giving the group a slight bow and then turning on his heels, Hayden walked away.  His obvious embarrassment being too much for him to face and not wanting to throw a wet blanket on their celebration, he stepped out of the Assembly Hall and stopped at a large window and looked out at the sky and wondered where his family was at that very moment.  He would have even settled for his brother, Jayden.  Mother...Father...even Jay...be safe...
