VIFA-3 BW2: Prologue

Orbit of LV-426

The 125th Large Scale Research Fleet, after completing it's refurbishing from the completion of it's last mission of exploration, starts on a new mission: the investigation of the mysterious Fold Bugs that live in the Spiritia Dimension and occasionally appear in the Super Dimension to terrorize ships mid-fold.

The city sections of the Megaroad 25, Environment (War)Ship, and the SDFN-08 Focker are only lightly populated; perhaps about a quarter of their design load.  They are mostly filled with the family of New UN Forces' personnel assigned to the fleet, and the workers and their families that run the bio-plant and other manufacturing facilities within the ships.

After years of work chasing spotting and following up leads, the scientists in the fleet have developed a technology that allows the fleet to not only detect, but track Fold Bugs.

On this day, the SDFN-08 successfully tracked a Fold Bug, but was unable to capture it with existing technology.  Minor damage is incurred within one of the hangers of one of the ARMD, when the Fold Bug briefly counterattacked.

Research on Fold Bug capture and transport technology commences.  Technology that captures a Fold Bug in Super Dimension space, and allows it to be transported and contained in normal space is developed by mid-2065.

Fold Bug captured with minimal damage to the capture teams.  Fold Bug successfully brought back to normal space and transferred to the Megaroad 25.

Super Fold Quartz is discovered within and being produced by the Fold Bug.  As Fold Quartz is known as the enhancement that made the Super Fold Booster technology possible, the mineral is immediately put to test.

Mission of the 125th Research Fleet changes to investigation of the capabilities of Super Fold Quartz.

Experimental Super Dimension Fold Drive, based on the Super Fold Quartz and allowing time and alternate reality travel, is completed and installed in the SDFN-08.  It is tested for the first time on the same date.

First time travel experiment is to a date 5 years in the past.  Ship successfully activates Super Dimension Fold Drive in the Super Dimension, and successfully folds back in time.  Experiment ended in failure when the SDFN-08 fades out of the past and fades into the present 0.5 seconds after defolding into normal space.

Over the subsequent days, ship performs more time and alternate reality travel experiments, all of which end in the same manner.

Eden

Transport ship that had disappeared in 2023 in a Fold Dislocation while en route suddenly reappears at Eden.  Crew, passengers and officials at Eden are baffled.  Especially as the chronometers on the transport are all 45 years out of date.  Citizens of Eden celebrate the arrival of a "time capsule".  Within a few months, 7 members of the transports crews and passengers commit suicide as they cannot handle the stress and hardship of time displacement and their celebrity status.

125th Research Fleet arrives at Eden and begins examining the transport ship and crew.  Theory developed that due to time and reality specific String* Osculation, travel to alternate realities and time has proved elusive to date.  Development of technology to exclude or artificially alter the osculation rate commences.

Deep Space

String Osculation Exclusion Field technology developed, allowing exploration of time and alternate realities.

The SDFN-08 successfully folds to 5 years in the past.  After staying for 15 minutes to gather sensor data (star positions to confirm the date, as well as String Osculation measurements), the ship returns to the present and rejoins the 125th Research Fleet.

Over the following weeks, numerous missions commenced to explore alternate realities and visit the past and future.  Due to fears of altering the time line, the majority of time exploration occurs in alternate realities.  At least two realities are horribly changed.

A number of teams also fail to return to our reality due to the experimental nature of the technology.

Alternate reality exploration deemed too risky, and further missions are forbidden to all but highly trained specialists.

UNI Major General Yoshimoto successfully argues his case Admiral Yoshida that he should reform the VIFA-3 Black Wraiths, and that they, and only they should be entrusted with the missions to explore alternate realities and manipulate their time-lines.  Yoshida agrees only because the Black Wraiths are the only squadron to have experienced time travel, on record, and that they only be allowed to proceed on manipulation missions when they are well versed in the history of the UN; this is to prevent unintended manipulation and pollution happening to the time lines of the alternate realities.

Yoshimoto begins contacting personnel for the VIFA-3 Black Wraiths.  His team only manages to contact two of the original members: Major Zed Cassel and Major Mjuiri Kavryn.  Yoshimoto decides that the team will be rounded out by the best of the best of the New UN Forces' personnel that participated on some of the time and alternate reality missions in the 125th Research Fleet, lead by Colonel Janes Shizuka Yamato; a protégé of the late former leader of the original Black Wraiths: Major Jin-Hee Kim.

The Black Wraiths 2  assembly on the SDFN-08 Focker and they are briefed on their mission: to experiment in other realities; such as what would happen if the SDF-1 didn't land, Basara Nekki was never given the Fire Valkyrie opportunity, and so forth.

Colonel Yamato voices some protest about the morality of the mission and if they have the right to do such things.  Yoshimoto silences her with a remark that he'll find someone else to do the mission.  To which Yamato replied, "there's no one better than me, and I don't trust anyone else with the job."

Over the following weeks, the Black Wraiths undergo a crash course of training, to familiarize the pilots with (the UN government) history, techniques in investigation, intelligence gathering, impersonation, research and so on.  They are also trained in piloting at least one key variable vehicle from the major points in the variable fighter development chronology.

The SDFN-08 departs on a familiarization mission to an alternate reality and time to acclimate the Black Wraiths 2 to what they might expect during their missions.  They travel to approximately 77,000 BCE, and witness the Toba super-eruption and the ensuing blanketing of the Indian Subcontinent in 15 cm of ash.

While looking out at the cloud of ash from space, Major General Yoshimoto laments, "even though we have the means, there are just some things that we can't change..."

Colonel Yamato squinted at Yoshimoto, "you have a dead wife you want to bring back?"

Yoshimoto grew quiet and simply stared in cold anger at the suffocating death of all the humans and animals on the subcontinent (not that they can actually be seen, what with the SDFN-08 in low Earth orbit.)

Mid Transit between Earth (circa 77,000 BCE) and outer edge of the Local Spur (circa 2067)
Bridge of the SDFN-08

Lieutenant General Alistair, Captain of the SDFN-08 Focker, is on the bridge, talking with Admiral Yoshida and Major General Yoshimoto.  They are all looking out at the swirling colours of Super Dimension Space swooshing past the ship.

Alistair laments, "I certainly hope that they create a device that let's us transport anywhere in the galaxy, soon.  They've already mastered the ability to transport any time..."

Yoshimoto grins slightly, "give them time... and enough resources, and I'm sure they'll come up with something soon."

Yoshimoto chuckles slightly.

The ship defolds, and one of the bridge bunnies shouts out, "arrival at the 125th Research Fleet, sirs!"

Outside, it's empty black space.

Yoshida gasps.  Alistair's eyes open in shock.

Yoshimoto yells out, "what year did we return to?!"

The same bridge bunny yells back, "2067... May... Second!"  Her voice is full of nervousness.

Another bunny yells out, "nothing on sensors!"

Alistair adopts the thinking man pose.  "Hmmm... maybe the exclusion field is disrupting sensors?  A side effect of the long-term time travel?"

Yoshida looks at the bunny, "deactivate the exclusion field, and send a recon craft out.  With luck, it's sensors won't be affected."

"Roger."

Yoshimoto leans close to Yoshida, "it'll take about 5 minutes before the field is completely desaturated."

Yoshida nods.

3 minutes later, a radome equipped recon VF launches.  As soon as it's off the deck, the pilot yells in a panicked voice, "What the he--" his voice cuts off, as the craft fades into nothingness.

Yoshimoto, who was watching the pilot take off in a monitor, loses all the colour in his face.  He's speechless for a moment, as Alistair and Yoshida panic.

Yoshimoto weakly orders, "reactivate the field."  His throat is dry, and it barely croaks out.  He clears his throat, and yells at the top of his lungs, "REACTIVATE THE FUCKING EXCLUSION FIELD OR WE ALL DIE!"

The bridge is so quiet, that everyone hears the click of the button as the poor, nervous bridge bunny presses it.

Alistair and Yoshida give Yoshimoto dirty looks.  Yoshida grumbles, "that's improper decorum for an officer, young man!"  Alistair adds, "I won't allow my bridge officers to be treated with that tone!"

Yoshimoto shushes both of them sternly.  "Replay the telemetry from the recon flight!" he barks.

"Sir!" the bridge bunny replies.  The telemetry from the recon VF is the same as the SDFN-08 until the moment it's wheels leave the deck.  From that moment onwards, it's barraged with entirely different information.  It's so much, that it's a jumble of overlayed video images.

"Let me," Yoshimoto says, as he steps over to the control panel and starts manipulating the data.  He manages to retrieve a single image: Sheik Yer-Bootii flanked by to Black Samba!  It must be a news broadcast, as the bottom banner reads, "All Hail the Sheik, the new Supreme Leader of the Zentraadi!"

Colour drains from Yoshimoto's face a second time in 5 minutes.  "The time line... OUR time line's been changed!"

Outer Edge of the Local Spur

Major General has summoned the Black Wraiths to a briefing room.  He shows them the picture of Sheik Yer-Bootii and the Black Samba.

Everyone is shocked.  Especially at the revelation that their time line has been changed.  Cassel and Kavryn are even more shocked, as an enemy from their past, that they thought was long gone, has reappeared!  What's worse is that he's brought back at least two Black Samba.  On top of that, the Black Samba look a little different.  Possibly improved versions.

Yoshimoto goes on to tell them that their mission has changed and that they are all now Time Interdiction Officers charged with restoring the time line to it's original form.

He adds that the command staff learnt from the Zentraadi lore database that the Janus, a mythical device that supposedly opened the first portal to the Evhil Dimension, is rumoured to allow time travel.  Mr. Bushi, a highly trained UNI officer is about to be dispatched on a mission to an alternate reality to learn the location of the Janus.  When he returns, the Black Wraiths will use that intel on a mission to retrieve the Janus before Sheik Yer-bootii can get it, and develop time travel technology from it.  Thus preventing the alteration to this reality.

The SDFN-08 then folds to 2055, into the vicinity of the Messiah Planetary Cluster.  As it takes a week or two of fold, the Black Wraiths are put through further training.  Mr. Bushi prepares for the mission by undergoing cosmetic surgery to make him look like a mutant animal (it'd been previously reported that the dimension was populated exclusively by mutant animals).

Upon arrival near the Messiah Planetary Cluster, the ship activates a portal to the TMNT dimension.  Mr. Bushi walks through and commences his intelligence gathering mission.

The SDFN-08 folds a few months ahead in time, and opens a portal to the TMNT dimension, and asks for an update.

This continues a few more times, until Mr. Bushi informs the SDFN-08 that the private military supply company he's created has dispatched it's VF team to a planet that's rumoured to have the Janus.  Mr. Bushi reports that he'll have the intel in about a weeks time.

The ship folds ahead 5 days, and to the orbit of planet Messiah.  It takes another 3 days before Mr. Bushi activates his pick-up signal.

The date: 2059.01.25; about 09:00.

End Prologue.
