Time since Sheik Yer-bootii took control: 18 days
2059.01.17; about 14:30.
Orbit of "Another Planet", in the M55NGC6909 Planetary Cluster:
Yoshimoto's Office

Archer sits bolt upright and salutes, "yes, sir!  I'm more than up to it, sir!"

"Good," Yoshimoto smiles, relief faintly crossing his face.  "You have simulator training rooms reserved for you.  Good luck."

The next 6 days pass in a blur as everyone trains hard, learns hard, and prepares hard for the upcoming mission.  During the first two days, the SDFN-08 catches a fold bug.  Super Fold Quartz is retrieved from it, and processing begins.

By the end of the 5th day, the fold quartz is processed and weapons have been adapted to it.  The pilots are informed that due to the limited amount, only the gun pod of their VF-27 will be adapted to it.

Time since Sheik Yer-bootii took control: 24 days
2059.01.17; about 14:30.
Orbit of "Another Planet", in the M55NGC6909 Planetary Cluster:

The SDFN-08 defolds in the combat zone just in time to see itself folding away.  The pilots launch amidst all of the other variable craft launching, and a flurry of AA gun fire and missiles being fired from the SDFN-08 to cover their launching.

The sky eruptions with blossoms of hellfire.  At first, the Black Samba dive like angry hornets at the SDFN-08; as finally their target is not fleeing; and pound their guns at the rapidly ascending UNI forces.

Within moments, their are losses on both sides.  The UNI forces expected this, but the Black Samba weren't!  Their loss of their invulnerability shocks them, and they all break formation.  The battlefield devolves into chaos.

Which suits our heroes perfectly fine.  Their three VF-27 rocket through the confusion, and accelerate toward Yamato's flight, which is taking heavy fire from half a dozen Black Samba.

Archer, Cassel and Kavryn all fire beam-grenades and take out one apiece with their first shots.  A fourth quickly falls, as the 3 pilots transform to battroid and hose the Black Samba with gun fire.  The Black Samba turn tail, and a 5th goes down in flames.

The 3 pilots escort Yamato's flight back toward the SDFN-08.  For the majority of the trip, the confusion of the furball covers their progress.  However, in the last 5 km, about the time that the retreat order was sounded by the bridge, a quarter dozen Black Samba take notice and dive in to intercept the pilots and Yamato's flight.

Cassel yells at the other two to take Yamato's flight the rest of the way in, and he'll cover them.  Kavryn grumbles in disagreement, but obeys her orders.

Cassel has a tough time with the 3, and it looks like they're going to get the best of him.

As soon as Yamato's flight is on the deck, Kavryn orders Archer to watch over them and rockets back toward Cassel to help.

She's too late, the Black Samba have gotten the upper-hand.  One of them has latched on behind Cassel, and another has smacked his gun pod out of his arms.

Kavryn charges in, with her gun pod blazing.  She takes down one of the Black Samba.  But it's too late, the other two begin to fold away.

Yoshimoto has taken note of it on the bridge and yells, "quick!  Deactivate Cassel's time exclusion field!"

The operator sends the signal, but only Cassel's gun pod fades out of existence.

Yoshimoto's jaw hits the floor.

Captain Alistair barks out, "vaporize 'em before they fold!"

The SDFN-08's guns are brought to bare, and hammer away.  One of the Black Samba's is vapourized, but the other one and Cassel fold away.

Kavryn goes berserk, and starts shooting at Black Samba to the left and right.  She takes down a half dozen or so, before Archer comes up behind her, and grabs her, pulling her back toward the ship.

"We are leaving!" he yells, in his best Corporal Hicks impression.

Kavryn struggles, but lets Archer pull her back toward the ship.  She knows that Cassel is gone, and there's nothing she can do about it right now.

Time since Sheik Yer-bootii took control: 24 days
2059.01.17; about 15:00.
Orbit of "Another Planet", in the M55NGC6909 Planetary Cluster:
Yoshimoto's office

Yamato holds a face towel, sobbing into it.  She had just finished telling Archer, Kavryn, Laframboise, Yoshimoto and a few others about the horror of finding a Black Samba where they expected the Janus to be.  On top of it, the Black Samba looked like it had been waiting for dozens of years, and had evolved into a much, much more terrible looking, gnarled monstrous visage.  It had fired it's baster gun, blasting a hole in the rough, and faded out of existence.

Yoshimoto had nodded and mumbled something about the enemy also having exclusion fields.

Yamato continued saying that once they had dug themselves out of the rubble, they rocketed to orbit, only to see the massed defolds of the 50 or so Black Samba, and then the SDFN-08 fold away, only to reappear, fold away, reappear, fold away, and reappear once more.  She had broken down at that point, overcome with emotion.

Yoshimoto looks squarely at each and every pilot.  "We found out something very valuable today.  The enemy has exclusion fields, just like us.  This is both good and bad.  Good in that they have a weakness that we can exploit.  Bad in that they could foreseeable do the same to us.

We also know that the enemy was expecting someone.  Not us, and not when we appeared.  Therefore, we have an advantage - if we strike quickly enough, we will catch the enemy off guard, before he can rally the remains of his Black Samba force and prevent us from preventing his time alterations.

Third, we also MUST strike quickly, as the enemy has taken one of the Black Wraiths prisoner.  The good news is that they don't have one of the weapons used to defeat them to reverse engineer.  The bad news is that it's only a matter of time until the successfully torture the information out of Cassel.

Kavryn stands to her feet, "we must rescue him!"

Yoshimoto stares back with impassioned eyes.  "How?  We don't know where he is.  When he is!"

Kavryn sits down, visibly upset.

"However," Yoshimoto says, "he may have a chance if he can get out of the range of their exclusion fields."

Kavryn and Archer look at Yoshimoto with questioning expressions.  He doesn't elaborate.

"Now, if you're all in agreement, we have work to do.  We have to repair the time line.  Our analysts have confirmed that the time-line was disrupted in September, 2008.  Specifically by the activation of the Bird Man, which proceeded to destroy Earth.

Yes, men, we are going to stop the Bird Man, and save Roy Fokker!"
